Catatonia is a highly morbid psychomotor and affective disorder, which can affect autistic individuals with and without intellectual disability. Catatonic symptoms are treatable with pharmacotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy, but the longitudinal effectiveness of these treatments in autistic individuals has not been described. Chronotherapeutics are nonpharmacologic interventions whose development stems from investigations into sleep and circadian rhythm abnormalities associated with mood disorder. These therapies utilize controlled exposure to environmental cues (light, darkness) to regulate biologic rhythms. They encompass sleep-wake manipulations (partial/total sleep deprivation, sleep phase adjustment) and light therapy approaches.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a prevalent mood disorder characterized by alternating episodes of depression and mania, often accompanied by varying degrees of cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairments often serve as indicators of a bleak prognosis or the likelihood of progressing to dementia.
