In the present research, an attempt has been made to develop a new thin film microextraction method for the extraction of several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from aqueous samples collected from different industrial units prior to their analysis by gas chromatography combined with a flame ionization detector. In this approach, a thin iron mesh was modified by the formation of iron(II) oxinate on its surface and used for the extraction of analytes without an additional sorbent. For this purpose, first, the mesh was immersed in a sulfuric acid solution and then transferred into an 8-hydroxy quinoline (oxine) solution dissolved in ammonia solution.

Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) molecules on the surface of red blood cells play an important regulatory role in the invasion of merozoites of apicomplexan protozoa. Heparan sulfate, a type of GAG molecule, has been identified as an important receptor facilitating the invasion of red blood cells by these parasites. Proteins in the parasite that exhibit strong affinity for heparin may play a pivotal role in this invasion process.

Lectins that can recognize and bind to carbohydrates and glycoconjugates are at the epicentre of research owing to their prospective applications. In the present study, a D-fucose binding lectin from the serum of darkling beetle, Zophobas morio was purified and their mitogenic potential over human B-cells was evaluated. Biochemical assays on the preliminary characterization revealed the occurrence of single D-fucose binding lectin.

The use of cannabis-related products is currently experiencing extraordinary growth in popularity in the European and US markets. A wide variety of cannabis-related products have emerged, including oils, tinctures, edibles, topicals, cosmetics, and even beverages and sweets, offering the purported medical benefits without the psychoactive effects associated with Cannabis sativa. However, there is a significant gap in our understanding of bioaccumulation processes and their long-term effects, particularly as cannabinoids are highly lipophilic molecules.

The aim of this work was to develop and validate a rapid dispersive-solid-phase extraction method for the quantification of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) from plant extracts. The method was focused on the significant removal of the intricate matrix to ensure good sensitivity for the subsequent instrumental analysis of PA. This was achieved by employing nano-zirconium silicate (NZS) as a dispersive-SPE sorbent.
