Baicalin is a plant-derived, biologically active compound exerting numerous advantageous effects. Adipocytes store and release energy in the process of lipogenesis and lipolysis. Rodent studies have shown that baicalin treatment positively affects fat tissue, however, data on the direct influence of this compound on adipocyte metabolism is lacking.

Introduction: Recurrent hypoglycemia (RH) impairs secretion of counterregulatory hormones. Whether and how RH affects responses within metabolically important peripheral organs to counterregulatory hormones are poorly understood.
Objective: To study the effects of RH on metabolic pathways associated with glucose counterregulation within liver, white adipose tissue and skeletal muscle.

Background/objectives: L. (guava) leaves have been shown to exhibit hypoglycemic and antidiabetic effects in rodents. This study investigated the effects of guava leaf extract on adipogenesis, glucose uptake, and lipolysis of adipocytes to examine whether the antidiabetic properties are mediated through direct effects on adipocytes.

Hemin is an activator of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), an enzyme catalyzing heme degradation. Up-regulation of HO-1 is observed in response to various pathological conditions. Moreover, pharmacological activation of HO-1 is associated with numerous beneficial effects in the organism.

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key intracellular energy sensor and regulates processes associated with energy metabolism. In the present study, effects of AICAR, a pharmacological activator of AMPK, on metabolism of adipocytes of non-fasted and 12-h fasted rats were compared. It was shown that in fat cells of control rats, epinephrine- and dibutyryl-cAMP-induced lipolysis was markedly reduced in the presence of AICAR.
