A 54-year-old man who had been on the kidney donor register for 32 years received a kidney from a 9-year-old boy who had died of fulminant myocarditis. The post-operative course was poor, and hemodialysis was still needed after surgery. A kidney biopsy one hour after surgery showed a neutrophil-predominant inflammatory cell infiltrate localized to the peritubular capillaries (PTC) and acute tubular necrosis of the proximal tubule.

Background: Butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid, has shown potential to improve left ventricular (LV) function and induce vasorelaxation in rodents. Butyrate may either be produced by the microbiome in the colon, be ingested or administered intravenously. The present study investigated the in vivo aging of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) oral implants (ZiUnite®) removed after 37 to 181 months. These implants featured a porous zirconia surface to enhance osseointegration. They were placed in prospective clinical investigations and had to be explanted due to peri-implant bone breakdown.
