DNA nanotechnology has made initial progress toward developing gene-encoded DNA origami nanoparticles (NPs) that display potential utility for future gene therapy applications. However, due to the challenges involved with gene delivery into cells including transport through the membrane, intracellular targeting, and inherent expression of nucleases along with interference from other active proteins, it can be difficult to more directly study the effect of DNA NP design on subsequent gene expression. In this work, we demonstrate an approach for studying the expression of gene-encoding DNA origami NPs without the use of cells.

Bacteria are constantly threatened by their viral predators (phages), which has resulted in the development of defense systems for bacterial survival. One family of defense systems found widely across bacteria are OLD (for overcoming lysogeny defect) family nucleases. Despite recent discoveries regarding Class 2 and 4 OLD family nucleases and how phages overcome them, Class 1 OLD family nucleases warrant further study as there has only been one anti-phage Class 1 OLD family nuclease described to date.

This article presents a new and facile method for the synthesis of Schiff base compounds with a benzimidazole group using a low-cost and reusable calcium aluminate nanophosphorus catalyst (CaAlO). This approach avoids harmful solvents and reactants, supporting a more environmentally friendly synthesis process. The catalyst maintained its activity and heterogeneity over four cycles with minimal loss of efficiency.

Many animals display physiological and behavioral activities limited to specific times of the day. Certain insects exhibit clear daily rhythms in their mating activities that are regulated by an internal biological clock. However, the specific genetic mechanisms underlying this regulation remain largely unexplored.
