AI Article Synopsis

  • The authors present 13 cases of hypertrophic sialosis, examining the common reactions despite various underlying causes.
  • They analyze the clinical findings in relation to animal experiments that induced similar lesions for comparison.
  • The potential link between the observed cellular hyperplasia/hypertrophy and autonomic nervous system disorders remains uncertain.

Article Abstract

The authors describe 13 cases of hypertrophic sialosis and discuss possible mechanisms which could explain their appearance. In spite of different etiologies there is uniformity in the reactions produced. The authors therefore compared the clinical findings with those reported from animal experiments in which such lesions were artificially produced. Whether the processes of cellular hyperplasia and hypertrophy observed are related to an autonomic nervous system disorder, is open to question.

Background: Injecting botulinum toxin (BTX) into the submandibular glands (SMGs) can treat drooling symptoms in neurological diseases and improve the aesthetics of SMG hypertrophy and ptotic SMGs.

Objectives: This study aimed to define the size and position of the SMGs by high-frequency ultrasound, and to perform statistical analysis to improve the safety and accuracy of BTX injection therapy.

Methods: Neck ultrasonography with high-frequency ultrasound was performed on 214 volunteers.

Sialadenosis (sialosis) is a chronic, noninflammatory, nonneoplastic, bilateral, often painless enlargement of the salivary glands, most frequently affecting the parotid glands. May 2014

From the *Department of Radiology, Samsun Training and Research Hospital; and †Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Ondokuz Mayis University School of Medicine, Samsun; and Departments of ‡Radiology and §Otolaryngology, Çankiri State Hospital, Çankiri, Turkey.

In this clinical report, 3 cases, admitted to the ears, nose, throat outpatient clinic with the complaints of unilateral swelling in the parotid region and facial asymmetry, are presented. In the etiology, contralateral parotid gland aplasia with compensatory hypertrophy and sialosis was detected. With this rare condition, clinical and radiological features of this anomaly are discussed.
