Elevated levels of androgen are risk factors for disrupted follicular maturation in the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a reproductive disease in women. As essential cell types for follicular maturation, granulosa and thecal cells respond to androgen, but their responses are unclear at the subpopulation level. Using single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics, we examined the subpopulation and function alterations in an androgen-induced PCOS-like mouse model.

A single-nucleus transcriptomic atlas characterizes cell types and their molecular features in the ovary of adult Nile tilapia.

J Fish Biol

December 2024

Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Animal Biotechnology and Disease Control and Prevention, Shandong Agricultural University, Tai'an, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied the different types of cells in the ovaries of adult Nile tilapia fish using a special method called single-nucleus RNA sequencing.
  • They discovered four types of cells: oogonia, oocytes, granulosa cells, and thecal cells, each with unique genes and jobs.
  • The research also showed how these cells communicate with each other, which is important for fish reproduction, and identified new genes that could help in understanding fish ovary development.

Serum androgen dynamics in young women aged 18-40 treated with chemotherapy for breast cancer: an observational, multicentric, prospective study in France.

Hum Fertil (Camb)

December 2024

Service de médecine et biologie du développement et de la reproduction, CHU de Nantes, Bd Jean Monnet, Nantes, France.

Although the deleterious impact of chemotherapy regimen used to treat women of reproductive age with breast cancer on ovarian reserve has been extensively studied, hardly anything has been reported on the effect of these protocols on theca cell function and ovarian androgen secretion. The aim of this prospective multicentric cohort study was to describe serum levels of total testosterone and androstenedione during chemotherapy and 24-month follow-up in 250 patients <40 years treated for breast cancer. Mean basal levels of androstenedione and total testosterone at diagnosis were 1.

Expression of Relaxin Family Peptide Receptors 1 and 3 in the Ovarian Follicle of Japanese Quail.

J Poult Sci

February 2024

United Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Gifu University, 1-1 Yanagido, Gifu 501-1193, Japan.

In our previous studies, we demonstrated that the primary source of relaxin 3 (RLN3) in Japanese quail is ovarian granulosa cells. Although several relaxin family peptide (RXFP) receptors have been sequenced, the intricacies of these receptors in avian species remain insufficiently clarified. Therefore, we assessed the expression of RXFP receptors, RXFP1 and 3, in Japanese quail.

This study sought to examine the ovarian cellular and stromal components of the zebrafish () throughout the spawning season using light and electron microscopic tools. The ovaries of zebrafish showed oocytes in all stages of follicular development and degeneration (atresia). Six stages of oogenesis were demonstrated: oogonia, early oocytes, late oocytes, vacuolated follicles, the yolk globule stage (vitellogenesis), and mature follicles.
