Role of narrow band imaging in assessing bronchial mucosal hypervascularization in COVID-19 patients.

Respir Med Res

January 2025

Pneumology Department, University Hospital Centre Amiens-Picardie, Amiens, France; AGIR Unit, University Picardie Jules Vernes, Amiens, France.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 virus which targets the lung vasculature is supposed to affect both pulmonary and bronchial arteries. This study evaluated the tracheobronchial vascularization density observed with narrow band imaging (NBI) in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia. To determine if the observed changes were specific of COVID-19 patients, the procedure was also performed in non-COVID-19 patients.

Early and accurate diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is key to effective outbreak management, and in humans thoracic radiography is used extensively for screening purposes. In wildlife TB radiography is a relatively accessible diagnostic tool, particularly in under-resourced settings, however its use is limited by body size. Sun bears are susceptible to human-associated TB, and their small body size makes thoracic radiography feasible.

Bronchiectasis is a well-recognized chronic respiratory disease characterized by a productive cough and multi-microbial activation syndrome (MMAS) of various respiratory infections due to what can be the permanent dilatation of the bronchi. Bronchiectasis represents an ongoing challenge to conventional antibiotic treatment as the damaged bronchial environment remains conducive to ongoing opportunistic infections and microbial mutations, leading to multi-drug resistance. Standard treatment guidelines are designed to promptly identify and address the primary infection.

Background: Neutrophil elastase (NE) has been proposed as a potential biomarker for evaluating the severity and prognosis of bronchiectasis. This study aimed to compare bronchial lavage quantification of NE levels and activities with those of sputum.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in which 24 Vietnamese adults with bronchiectasis were enrolled from June 2023 to August 2023.
