Parkinson's disease (PD) is a heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorder with a wide range of clinical phenotypes. Pathologically, it is characterized by neuronal inclusions containing misfolded, fibrillar alpha-synuclein (aSyn). Prion-like properties of aSyn contribute to the spread of aSyn pathology throughout the nervous system as the disease progresses.

Differences in binding affinity among cell-cycle CDK and cyclin pairs.

J Mol Biol

January 2025

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of California, Santa Cruz, CA. Electronic address:

The mammalian cell cycle is coordinated by primarily four cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), which are activated by a family of cyclin proteins to phosphorylate diverse protein effectors of cell growth and division. A wealth of qualitative protein interaction studies have supported a model in which different CDKs have specific cognate cyclin partners. However, there have been few quantitative measurements of binding kinetics and affinity to support our understanding of CDK-cyclin preferences and the structural origins of those preferences.

Currently, the development of high-performance adsorbents for the removal of nanoplastics in complex aquatic environments is challenging. In this study, a functionalized polyethyleneimine-phosphorylated microcrystalline cellulose/MoS (PEI-PMCC/MoS) hybrid aerogel was prepared and applied to remove carboxyl-modified polystyrene (PS-COOH) nanoplastics from the aqueous solution. Benefiting from the introduced functional groups and the expanded lamellar structure in MoS nanosheets as well as the highly porous 3D structure of the aerogel, PEI-PMCC/MoS demonstrated high efficiency in PS-COOH nanoplastics removal, achieving a 402.

Voltage-gated Na+ (Nav) channels are the primary determinants of the action potential in excitable cells. Nav channels rely on a wide and diverse array of intracellular protein-protein interactions (PPIs) to achieve their full function. Glycogen synthase kinase 3 β (GSK3β) has been previously identified as a modulator of Nav1.

Ras S89D mutation induced allosteric changes that promoted its nucleotide exchange and signaling activation.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, School of Medicine, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, China. Electronic address:

The small GTPase Ras is among the most frequently mutated genes and its mutations often drive oncogenesis across various cancers. While the role of NRas phosphorylation at S89 in the context of a Q61R mutation in melanoma genesis remains controversial, the impact of S89 phosphorylation on NRas function has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we employed the S89D phosphorylation-mimetic mutation and demonstrated that the S89D mutation alone activated all Ras isoforms by increasing the GTP-bound population, thereby promoting ERK phosphorylation and cell proliferation.
