Evaluating Forelimb and Hindlimb Joint Conformation of Morna Racehorses ().

Vet Sci

January 2025

Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR 523808, China.

Measuring limb joint angles is crucial for understanding horse conformation, performance, injury diagnosis, and prevention. While Thoroughbred horses have been extensively studied, local Pakistani breeds (e.g.

Background: Musculoskeletal injuries (MSI) are a major concern in the horse racing industry, often leading to career-ending outcomes. Contributing factors include conformation, limb and joint defects, hoof structure, age, and hard track surfaces.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the distribution of MSI in Thoroughbred and Arabian racehorses during racing and training, categorised by breed and track surface.

Swedish Warmblood horses (SWB) are bred for show jumping and/or dressage with young horse test scores as indicator traits. This study aimed to investigate possible candidate genes and regions of importance for evaluated and linearly scored young horse test traits. A single-step genome-wide association study (ssGWAS) was done using the BLUPF90 suite of programs for factors scores from factor analysis of traits assessed at young horse tests together with height at withers.

Comparison of Partially Denatured Cytochrome Structural Ensembles in Solution and Gas Phases Using Cross-Linking Mass Spectrometry.

Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Indiana University─Indianapolis, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202, United States.

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) can retain intact protein structures, but details about partially folded and unfolded protein structures during and after introduction to the gas phase are elusive. Here we use ESI-MS with chemical cross-linkers to compare denatured cytochrome structures in both solution and gas phases. Solution phase cross-linking prior to ESI captures solution phase structures, while gas phase cross-linking through ion/ion reactions in the trap cell captures gas phase structures.

Effects of allosteric effectors on oxygen binding to crystals of hemoglobin in the R-quaternary structure.

Protein Sci

January 2025

Division of Biophysics, Department of Physiology, Jichi Medical University, Shimotsuke, Tochigi, Japan.

Much is known about how allosteric effectors influence the equilibrium between the relaxed (R) and tense (T) states of hemoglobin (Hb), but little is known about how and to what extent the effectors lower the intrinsic O affinity of each allosteric state, especially the R-state. Here, we provide a thorough characterization of the O equilibria of effector-bound and unbound R-quaternary form crystals of horse Hb without a quaternary structural switching. In the absence of effectors, R crystals of horse Hb were shown to bind O noncooperatively with a very high affinity virtually identical to that of R crystals of human Hb.
