Plasma adiponectin/leptin ratio associates with subcutaneous abdominal and omental adipose tissue characteristics in women.

BMC Endocr Disord

Centre de recherche de l'Institut Universitaire de Cardiologie et Pneumologie de Québec (CRIUCPQ), Université Laval, Québec City, Canada.

Background: A better understanding of adipose tissue (AT) dysfunction, which includes morphological and functional changes such as adipocyte hypertrophy as well as impaired adipogenesis, lipid storage/mobilization, endocrine and inflammatory responses, is needed in the context of obesity. One dimension of AT dysfunction, secretory adiposopathy, often assessed as a low plasma adiponectin (A)/leptin (L) ratio, is commonly observed in obesity. The aim of this study was to examine markers of AT development and metabolism in 67 women of varying age and adiposity (age: 40-62 years; body mass index, BMI: 17-41 kg/m) according to levels of adiponectinemia, leptinemia or the plasma A/L ratio.

This study evaluated the composition and the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activity of the crude extracts and two isolated compounds, anamarine (ANA) and 10-epi-olguine (eOL), obtained from the leaves of Cantinoa stricta (Lamiaceae). Crude ethanolic extract (EEt) and dichloromethane extract (DCM), selected based on NMR data, were submitted to pharmacological tests in male Swiss mice. The oral administration of EEt and DCM significantly reduced the second phase of formalin-induced nociception (60%), lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced mechanical hyperalgesia (90%), and carrageenan (Cg)-induced edema (25%).

Possible Regulation of P-Glycoprotein Function by Adrenergic Agonists II: Study with Isolated Rat Jejunal Sheets and Caco-2 Cell monolayers.

J Pharm Sci

Department of Pharmaceutics, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University, 1-1-1 Tsushima-naka, Kita-ku, Okayama 700-8530, Japan. Electronic address:

To clarify the regulation of drug absorption by the enteric nervous system, we investigated how adrenergic agonists (adrenaline (ADR), clonidine (CLO), dobutamine (DOB)) and dibutyryl cAMP (DBcAMP) affected P-glycoprotein (P-gp) function by utilizing isolated rat jejunal sheets and Caco-2 cell monolayers. ADR and CLO significantly decreased the secretory transport (P) of rhodamine-123 and tended to decrease the transport via P-gp (P) and passive transport (P). In contrast, DBcAMP significantly increased and DOB tended to increase P and both tended to increase Pand P.

Opposing functions of α- and β-adrenoceptors in the formation of processes by cultured astrocytes.

J Pharmacol Sci

March 2021

Laboratory of Pharmacology, Department of Basic Veterinary Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Hokkaido University, Kita 18, Nishi 9, Kita-ku, Sapporo, 060-0818, Japan. Electronic address:

Astrocytes are glial cells with numerous fine processes which are important for the functions of the central nervous system. The activation of β-adrenoceptors induces process formation of astrocytes via cyclic AMP (cAMP) signaling. However, the role of α-adrenoceptors in the astrocyte morphology has not been elucidated.

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key intracellular energy sensor and regulates processes associated with energy metabolism. In the present study, effects of AICAR, a pharmacological activator of AMPK, on metabolism of adipocytes of non-fasted and 12-h fasted rats were compared. It was shown that in fat cells of control rats, epinephrine- and dibutyryl-cAMP-induced lipolysis was markedly reduced in the presence of AICAR.
