Light-Triggered Droplet Gating Strategy Based on Janus Membrane Fabricated by Femtosecond Laser.

The characteristics of the directed transport of liquids based on Janus membranes play a crucial role in practical applications in energy, materials, physics, chemistry, medicine, biology, and other fields. Although extensive progress has been made, it is still difficult to realize the accurate controllability of liquid directional transmembrane transport. The current gating strategies for the directed transport of liquids based on Janus membranes still have some limitations: (a) using magnetic fluid may cause contamination due to the addition of new substances and (b) utilizing hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity conversion of titanium dioxide requires a long switching time (over 30 min).

Biomimetic Transparent Slippery Surface for the Locomotion of Photocontrol Droplets and Bubbles.

November 2024

Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for the Green Preparation and Application of Functional Materials, Hubei University, Wuhan, 430062, P. R. China.

Directed transportation and collection of liquids and bubbles play a vital role in the survival of ecosystems. Among them, the optical response control is widely used in the fields of microfluidic chips and chemical synthesis because of its high remote operation and fast response speed. However, due to poor light transmission, the development direction of traditional near-infrared (NIR) absorbing materials in the field of visualization is limited, and there are few reports of manufacturing an operating platform that can realize the directional movement of droplets/bubbles on a single platform.

Magneto-Controlled Tubular Liquid Actuators with Pore Engineering for Liquid Transport and Regulation.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

October 2024

Key Laboratory of Green Printing, CAS Research/Education Center for Excellence in Molecular Sciences, Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Beijing, 100190, P. R. China.

Liquid manipulation using tubular actuators finds diverse applications ranging from microfluidics, printing, liquid transfer to micro-reactors. Achieving flexible and simple regulation of manipulated liquid droplets during transport is crucial for the tubular liquid actuators to perform complex and multiple functions, yet it remains challenging. Here, a facile tubular actuator for directional transport of various liquid droplets under the control of an externally applied magnetic field is presented.

Controlling the spontaneous directional transport of droplets plays an important role in the application of microchemical reactions and microdroplet detection. Although the relevant technologies have been widely studied, the existing spontaneous droplet transport strategies still face problems of complex structure, single function, and poor flexibility. Inspired by the spontaneous droplet transport strategy in nature, an asymmetric wettability surface with microcone channels (AWS-MC) is prepared on a flexible fabric by combining surface modification and femtosecond laser manufacturing technology.
