An Injectable Alginate Hydrogel Modified by Collagen and Fibronectin for Better Cellular Environment.

ACS Appl Bio Mater

January 2025

Division of Plastic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Yale School of Medicine, Yale University, 310 Cedar Street, New Haven, Connecticut 06510, United States.

Encapsulating fibroblasts in alginate hydrogels is a promising strategy to promote wound healing. However, improving the cell function within the alginate matrix remains a challenge. In this study, we engineer an injectable hydrogel through mixing alginate function with collagen and fibronectin, creating a better microenvironment for enhancing fibroblast function and cytokine secretion.

We present a case of a patient who sustained a distal radius fracture and underwent volar plate fixation. Despite initial non-operative management, subsequent corrective osteotomy was required due to malunion. Eighteen months later, the patient presented with an inability to extend the thumb, leading to a diagnosis of extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon rupture.

The present study analyzes the effects of preoperative serum albumin, hematocrit, and creatinine on postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing carpal tunnel decompression surgery. The American College of Surgeons National Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database was queried from 2011 to 2020. Albumin, hematocrit, and creatinine were collected for each patient, alongside covariates.

Novel 'mini-incision' metacarpal fixation technique for long oblique and spiral shaft fractures.

JPRAS Open

March 2025

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Department, Prince Sultan Military Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Background: Metacarpal shaft fractures account for 30 % of all hand fractures, and long oblique and spiral shaft fractures represent a significant quantity. Closed or open reduction and internal fixation is generally indicated for unstable fractures, rotational malalignment or significant metacarpal shortening. Various techniques can achieve appropriate fixation, though no single technique has been proven to be superior across all cases.

Background: An attractive waist-hip ratio leads to a favorable aesthetic appearance in women and can be achieved through the (ORUS) technique, which consists of the controlled fracture of the floating ribs through a small incision in the back based on an umbrella's functioning (open-semiclosed).

Methods: The ORUS technique was performed on 120 patients between 18 and 50 years of age. Patients were grouped according to the surgical procedure performed: ORUS (11 patients), ORUS + liposuction (n = 87), and ORUS + abdominoplasty (n = 22).
