Risk impact of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and spike protein on cardiac tissue: a comprehensive review.

Physiol Res

December 2024

Laboratory of Neurobiology and Molecular Psychiatry, Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic.

The global COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has led to significant morbidity and mortality, with a profound impact on cardiovascular health. This review investigates the mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2's interaction with cardiac tissue, particularly emphasizing the role of the Spike protein and ACE2 receptor in facilitating viral entry and subsequent cardiac complications. We dissect the structural features of the virus, its interactions with host cell receptors, and the resulting pathophysiological changes in the heart.

High glucose potentiates Zika virus induced-astroglial dysfunctions.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a neurotropic flavivirus that induces congenital Zika syndrome and neurodevelopmental disorders. Given that ZIKV can infect and replicate in neural cells, neurological complications in adult brain are also observed. Glial cells may emerge to delay and/or prevent the development of ZIKV-induced neurodegeneration.

Article Synopsis
  • Studies show kidney disease is linked to viral infections, causing kidney injury through systemic inflammation and direct infection of kidney cells.
  • Research using an immortalized human podocyte cell line (HPC) infected with lentivirus revealed strong immune responses and pathways related to cell death, indicating compromised cell viability.
  • The findings suggest that these lentivirus-infected HPC cells serve as a valuable model for studying how viral infections specifically damage podocytes, separate from other stressors like Adriamycin.

Introduction: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, the causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), causes post-acute infection syndrome in a surprisingly large number of cases worldwide. This condition, also known as long COVID or post-acute sequelae of COVID-19, is characterized by extremely complex symptoms and pathology. There is a growing consensus that this condition is a consequence of virus-induced immune activation and the inflammatory cascade, with its prolonged duration caused by a persistent virus reservoir.

COVID-19 Therapeutics Why Not Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs)?

J Assoc Physicians India

November 2023

Professor of Pharmacology Retired, MOSC Medical College, Kolenchery, Kerala, India, Corresponding Author.

Overactivity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) is a consistent feature of COVID-19 as indicated by high concentrations of angiotensin II (Ang II) in lungs and other tissues. Virus-induced downregulation of angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) explains the raised Ang II levels. Available evidence points to the crucial role of Ang II in the pathogenesis of coronavirus disease.
