Photocatalytic Oxidative Coupling of Benzyl Alcohol and Benzylamine for Imine Synthesis Using Immobilized CsBiBr Perovskite.

Small

December 2024

LSRE-LCM - Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering - Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, Rua Dr Roberto Frias, Porto, 4200-465, Portugal.

The oxidative cross-coupling of benzyl alcohol (BA) and benzylamine (BZA) is employed for the production of the corresponding imine, N-benzylidenebenzylamine (BZI), under visible light irradiation (light-emitting diodes (LE with λ = 417 nm) and mild reaction conditions. The cesium bismuth halide perovskites (CsBiBr, CBB) are synthesized by a one-step solution process as a sustainable alternative for the widely used Pb-halide perovskites. The CBB photocatalyst is immobilized on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) structure designed explicitly for three-dimensional (3D) printing to operate in both batch and continuous modes to overcome the need for a final catalyst separation step.

The global rapid emergence of azithromycin/ceftriaxone resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae threatens current recommend azithromycin/ceftriaxone dual therapy for gonorrhea to ensure effective treatment. Here, we identified the first two N. gonorrhoeae isolates with decreased ceftriaxone susceptibility in Thailand.

Artificial intelligence (AI), beyond the concrete applications that have already become part of our daily lives, makes it possible to process numerous and heterogeneous data and knowledge, and to understand potentially complex and abstract rules in a manner human intelligence can but without human intervention. AI combines two properties, self-learning by the successive and repetitive processing of data as well as the capacity to adapt, that is to say the possibility for a scripted program to deal with multiple situations likely to vary over time. Roundtable experts confirmed the potential contribution and theoretical benefit of AI in clinical research and in improving the efficiency of patient care.

Antimicrobial resistance and molecular characteristics of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates from men who have sex with men.

Int J Infect Dis

February 2019

Global Health and Tropical Medicine (GHTM) Tropical Clinic Unit, Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, New University of Lisbon (UNL), Lisbon, Portugal.

Objectives: To analyze the susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates to penicillin (Pen), cefixime (Cfm), ceftriaxone (Cro), tetracycline (Tet), ciprofloxacin (Cip), azithromycin (Azm), and spectinomycin (Spt), and to verify the presence of mutations in resistance genes.

Methods: Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed by Etest method on 30 N. gonorrhoeae isolates collected from the MSM (men who have sex with men) population.

The first extensively drug resistant (XDR) Neisseria gonorrhoeae strain with high resistance to the extended-spectrum cephalosporin ceftriaxone was identified in 2009 in Japan, but no other strain with this antimicrobial-resistance profile has been reported since. However, surveillance to date has been based on phenotypic methods and sequence typing, not genome sequencing. Therefore, little is known about the local population structure at the genomic level, and how resistance determinants and lineages are distributed and evolve.
