The combined pollution and oligotrophic characteristics of surface water led to poor self-purification capacity of water bodies. In this study, humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) were used to promote the denitrification process of strain Zoogloea sp. ZP7.

Microbial consortia in riverbed substrates and their extracellular matrix (biofilms) play a key role in phosphorus (P) entrapment. When P entrapment saturates, the benthic compartment changes from a P sink to a P source thus increasing eutrophication risk. P entrapment saturation is expected to differ between intracellular and extracellular P entrapment and between different magnitudes and durations of P inputs.

Periodic oxygen permeation is critical for pollutant removal within intertidal sediments. However, tidal effects on the vertical redox profile associated with cable bacterial activity is not well understood. In this study, we simulated and quantified the effects of tidal flooding, exposing, and their periodic alternation on vertical redox reactions and phenanthrene removal driven by cable bacteria in the riverbank sediment.

Depletion of dissolved oxygen (DO) is a significant incentive for biological catastrophic events in freshwater lakes. Although predicting the DO concentrations in lakes with high-frequency real-time data to prevent hypoxic events is effective, few related experimental studies were made. In this study, a short-term predicting model was developed for DO concentrations in three problematic areas in China's Chaohu Lake.
