Phenotypic Classification of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children Using Latent Class Analysis.

JAMA Netw Open

January 2025

Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia.

Importance: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is an uncommon but severe hyperinflammatory illness that occurs 2 to 6 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Presentation overlaps with other conditions, and risk factors for severity differ by patient. Characterizing patterns of MIS-C presentation can guide efforts to reduce misclassification, categorize phenotypes, and identify patients at risk for severe outcomes.

January 2025

Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitology, Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University, Okayama, Japan.

Objective: This study aimed to clarify whether nutritional status at admission affects enteral nutrition weaning 6 months after surgery in patients with esophageal cancer.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of 81 patients who underwent subtotal esophageal cancer resection between April 2014 and February 2016. The survey items were as follows: 1) sex, 2) age, 3) presence or absence of family members living together, 4) clinical stage, 5) surgical procedure, 6) reconstructed organs, 7) nutritional status at admission, 8) presence or absence of postoperative complications (anastomotic leakage, chylothorax, and recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis), and 9) presence or absence of treatment other than surgery (chemo- or radiotherapy).

Genomic profiling at a single center cracks the code in inborn errors of immunity.

Intern Emerg Med

January 2025

Unit of Internal Medicine and Clinical Oncology "G. Baccelli", Department of Precision and Regenerative Medicine and Ionian Area (DiMePRe-J), University of Bari Aldo Moro Medical School, Bari, Italy.

Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) entail a diverse group of disorders resulting from hereditary or de novo mutations in single genes, leading to immune dysregulation. This study explores the clinical utility of next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques in diagnosing monogenic immune defects. Eight patients attending the immunodeficiency clinic and with unclassified antibody deficiency were included in the analysis.

Development of optical microneedle-lens array for photodynamic therapy.

Biomed Microdevices

January 2025

Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo, Meguro-Ku, 153-8505, Tokyo, Japan.

Recently, photodynamic therapy (PDT) which involves a photosensitizer (PS), a special drug activated by light, and light irradiation has been widely used in treating various skin diseases such as port-wine stain as well as cancers such as melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. PDT comprises two general steps: the introduction of PS into the body or a specific spot to be treated, and the irradiation process using a light source with a specific wavelength to excite the PS. Although PDT is gaining great attention owing to its potential as a targeted approach in the treatment of skin cancers, several limitations still exist for practical use.

An insight on the additive impact of type 2 diabetes mellitus and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease on cardiovascular consequences.

Mol Biol Rep

January 2025

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Technology, BIT Mesra, Ranchi, 835215, India.

Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are associated with a multifactorial complicated aetiology that is often coexisting and has a strong and distinct connection with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). In order to accomplish effective and appropriate therapeutic strategies, a deeper understanding of the bidirectional interaction between NAFLD patients, NAFLD patients with T2DM, and NAFLD patients with CVDs is required to control the concomitant rise in prevalence of these conditions worldwide. This article also aims to shed light on the epidemiology and mechanisms behind the relationship between T2DM, NAFLD and the related cardiovascular consequences.
