Pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD) is a complex condition in which 2 consequential diseases interact and increase negative outcomes. Although the pathophysiologic mechanisms of PH-ILD are not yet well understood, the pronounced effect on functional status, supplemental oxygen requirements, health care resource utilization, and mortality that frequently accompany this diagnosis are well documented. A critical feature that complicates pathophysiologic understanding of PH-ILD is that progression of the pulmonary vascular disease does not always appear to be driven by the underlying lung disease.

Background: Staggering disease (SD) is a severe neurological disease that has been regularly reported in Swedish cats since the beginning of the 1970s. The aetiology of SD has been debated, but novel rustrela virus (RusV) was recently suggested as the causative agent in Swedish cases dating from 2017 onwards. However, whether RusV was associated with earlier cases of feline SD in Sweden remained unknown.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in the process of heart failure (HF) and are emerging biomarkers that can be used for the auxiliary diagnosis of HF. However, it is very challenging to accurately analyze the expression levels of trace miRNAs in complex clinical samples. Here, we developed an enzyme-free colorimetric sensor for the ultrasensitive detection of miRNA-423-5p (HF-associated miRNA) based on three-dimensional DNA walkers constructed from functional nucleic acids and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs).

This is the summary report of the 5th Translational Hepatology Meeting, endorsed by the Spanish Association for the Study of the Liver (AEEH) and held in Seville, Spain, in October 2023. The meeting aimed to provide an update on the latest advances in the field of basic and translational hepatology, covering different molecular, cellular, and pathophysiological aspects of the most relevant clinical challenges in liver pathologies. This includes the identification of novel biomarkers and diagnostic tools, the understanding of the relevance of immune response and inflammation in liver diseases, the characterization of current medical approaches to reverse liver diseases, the incorporation of novel molecular insights through omics techniques, or the characterization of the impact of toxic and metabolic insults, as well as other organ crosstalk, in liver pathophysiology.
