Fungi are the most important group of plant pathogens, responsible for many of the world's most devastating crop diseases. One of the reasons they are such successful pathogens is because several fungi have evolved the capacity to breach the tough outer cuticle of plants using specialized infection structures called appressoria. This is exemplified by the filamentous ascomycete fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, causal agent of rice blast, one of the most serious diseases affecting rice cultivation globally.

Whether large-scale variation in lineage diversification rates can be predicted by species properties at the population level is a key unresolved question at the interface between micro- and macroevolution. All else being equal, species with biological attributes that confer metapopulation stability should persist more often at timescales relevant to speciation and so give rise to new (incipient) forms that share these biological traits. Here, we develop a framework for testing the relationship between metapopulation properties related to persistence and phylogenetic speciation rates.

Sparsity measures are commonly utilized as health indicators for machine condition monitoring. Recently, with the assistance of Box-Cox transformation, kurtosis and negative entropy have been smoothly extended to form Box-Cox sparsity measures (BCSMs). However, traditional BCSMs do not generate sparsity measures that outperform negative entropy, which means it is meaningless to some extent.
