Background Dacryocystitis (DC) is a disease most often caused by an obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct, leading to over-accumulation of tears in the lacrimal sac, epiphora, and aseptic inflammation. External and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) aims to restore the tear pathway by creating a bypass from the lacrimal sac to the nose. The aim of this study is to investigate superior nasal septal deviation as a possible contributing factor in the incidence and treatment of dacryocystitis.

Milk is commonly screened both for indicators of animal disease and health, but also for foodborne hazards. Included in these analyses is the detection of , that can produce an enterotoxin, causing staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP), which often leads to sudden onset of significant gastrointestinal symptoms in humans. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of free or immobilized OLXAL-1 cells on oat flakes on the gut microbiota and metabolic and inflammatory markers in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced Type-1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) animal model. Forty-eight male Wistar rats were assigned into eight groups (n = 6): healthy or diabetic animals that received either a control diet (CD and DCD), an oat-supplemented diet (OD and DOD), a diet supplemented with free OLXAL-1 cells (CFC and DFC), or a diet supplemented with immobilized OLXAL-1 cells on oat flakes (CIC and DIC). Neither OLXAL-1 nor oat supplementation led to any significant positive effects on body weight, insulin levels, plasma glucose concentrations, or lipid profile parameters.

The microbial pollution status of river surface water is important to ensure a river-based quality drinking water supply for the public. The present study aimed to investigate bacterial contamination status in the upper Mahaweli River, the main drinking water supplier to the hill country of Sri Lanka. Both the raw surface water and treated water, taken at 14 drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) along the river segment of 60 km between Kotmale and Victoria reservoirs, were tested for total bacterial counts (TBC), total coliform counts (TCC) and faecal coliform counts (FCC).
