Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) facilitate cancer cell proliferation and survival. Stresses, including X-irradiation, increase BCAA uptake. However, the role of BCAA metabolism in cancer cell survival remains unclear.

X-irradiation of blood products is an alternative for gamma-ray to prevent post-transfusion GvHD. However, commercial X-irradiators are not widely available while little is known about their safety and efficacy for platelet products. This study introduces an efficient, accessible and cost-effective "X irradiation system" for platelet concentrates (PCs).

Senescence-like growth arrest (SLGA), which is a radiation-induced cell death pathway, is induced in immortalized normal human epithelial cell (hTERT-RPE1) by the daily fractionated X-irradiation with 1.5 Gy within 30 times. We here demonstrate that pre-treatment induces acquired radioresistance (ARR) that can survive from the lethal fractionated radiation.

Background: Ionizing radiation has been used for mutagenesis or material modification. The potential to use microalgae as a platform for antimicrobial production has been reported, but little work has been done to advance it beyond characterization to biotechnology. This study explored two different applications of ionizing radiation as a metabolic remodeler and a molecular modifier to enhance the antimicrobial activity of total protein and solvent extracts of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cells.

Xenografts of human skeletal muscle generated in mice can be used to study muscle pathology and to test drugs designed to treat myopathies and muscular dystrophies for their efficacy and specificity in human tissue. We previously developed methods to generate mature human skeletal muscles in immunocompromised mice starting with human myogenic precursor cells (hMPCs) from healthy individuals and individuals with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). Here, we examine a series of alternative treatments at each stage in order to optimize engraftment.
