Acid-base and hematological regulation in chicken embryos during internal progressive hypercapnic hypoxia.

Respir Physiol Neurobiol

February 2023

Developmental Integrative Biology, Department of Biological Sciences, University of North Texas, 1155 Union Circle #305220, Denton, TX 76203, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how day 15 chicken embryos manage blood conditions under varying levels of water submersion that simulate hypercapnic hypoxia.
  • It finds that metabolic acidosis occurs quickly with increased submersion, but the embryos can partially compensate with metabolic alkalosis initially, which fails after 6 hours.
  • The research indicates that while embryos show some ability to cope with acidosis due to submersion, severe conditions can lead to lethal levels of harmful blood substances within a couple of hours.

Invited review: Quantifying proton exchange from chemical reactions - Implications for the biochemistry of metabolic acidosis.

Comp Biochem Physiol A Mol Integr Physiol

September 2019

School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, Faculty of Health, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, QLD, Australia. Electronic address:

Given that the chemistry of lactate production disproves the existence of a lactic acidosis, there is a need to further reveal and explain the importance of the organic and computational chemistry of pH dependent competitive cation fractional (~) proton (H) exchange (~H). An additional importance of this knowledge is that it could potentially contradict the assumption of the Stewart approach to the physico-chemical theory of acid-base balance. For example, Stewart proposed that chemical reaction and pH dependent H dissociation and association do not directly influence the pH of cellular and systemic body fluids.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO) on performance and estimated energy system contribution during simulated taekwondo combat.

Methods: Nine taekwondo athletes completed two experimental sessions separated by at least 48 h. Athletes consumed 300 mg/kg body mass of NaHCO or placebo (CaCO) 90 min before the combat simulation (three rounds of 2 min separated by 1 min passive recovery), in a double-blind, randomized, repeated-measures crossover design.

The Warburg Effect and the Hallmarks of Cancer.

Anticancer Agents Med Chem

May 2017

Al-Ghad International College for Applied Medical Sciences, Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah, KSA, Center for Evolution and Cancer, University of California San Francisco, San Francisco, CA,United States.

It is a longstanding debate whether cancer is one disease or a set of very diverse diseases. The goal of this paper is to suggest strongly that most of (if not all) the hallmarks of cancer could be the consequence of the Warburg's effect. As a result of the metabolic impairment of the oxidative phosphorylation, there is a decrease in ATP concentration.
