Advances in polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production from renewable waste materials using halophilic microorganisms: A comprehensive review.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Biotechnology Program, Center for Sustainable Development, College of Arts and Sciences, Qatar University, Doha 2713, Qatar. Electronic address:

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biodegradable and biocompatible polymers that can replace conventional plastics in different sectors. However, PHA commercialization is hampered due to their high production cost resulting from the use of high purity substrates, their low conversion into PHAs by using conventional microbial chassis and the high downstream processing cost. Taking these challenges into account, researchers are focusing on the use of waste by-products as alternative low-cost feedstocks for fast-growing and contamination-resistant halophilic microorganisms (Bacteria, Archaea…).

Enhancing Cardiomyocyte Purity through Lactate-Based Metabolic Selection.

Tissue Eng Regen Med

January 2025

Department of Physiology, Graduate School of Medical Science, Brain Korea 21 Project, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, 03722, Republic of Korea.

Background: Direct reprogramming of fibroblasts into chemically induced cardiomyocyte-like cells (CiCMs) through small molecules presents a promising cell source for cardiac regeneration and therapeutic development. However, the contaminating non-cardiomyocytes, primarily unconverted fibroblasts, reduce the effectiveness of CiCMs in various applications. This study investigated a metabolic selection approach using lactate to enrich CiCMs by exploiting the unique metabolic capability of cardiomyocytes to utilize lactate as an alternative energy source.

The manufacturing of thin films through selective laser sintering of micro/nanoparticles is an emerging technology that has been developing rapidly over the last two decades owing to its digitization, efficiency, and good adaptability to various materials. However, high-quality laser sintering of different materials remains a challenge: ceramic particles are difficult to be sintered due to low absorbance; metallic particles are prone to oxidation; semiconductor particles are difficult to process for performance enhancement due to high stress. In this work, a new approach is proposed that employs an additional Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) sacrificial layer to assist laser sintering of different functional materials, which detaches after sintering without contaminating the target material.

Microfluidic fractionation of microplastics, bacteria and microalgae with induced-charge electro-osmotic eddies.

Anal Chim Acta

February 2025

School of Control Engineering, Northeastern University at Qinhuangdao, Qinhuangdao, 066004, PR China; Hebei Key Laboratory of Micro-Nano Precision Optical Sensing and Measurement Technology, Qinhuangdao, 066004, PR China. Electronic address:

Background: Fractionation of microalgal cells has important applications in producing pharmaceuticals and treating diseases. Multiple types of microalgal cells generally coexist in the oceans or lakes and are easily contaminated by microplastics and bacteria. Therefore, it is of paramount significance to develop an effective fractionation approach for microalgal cells for biological applications.

Background: Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) product characteristics are not well established. The aim of this study was to compare mononuclear cells (MNCs) collection using the new Amicus blue (AB) In-line ECP system to our standard Off-line ECP system using the Optia apheresis device and the MacoGenic G2 inactivation system (OM).

Study Design And Methods: We assessed the ECP products and procedure parameters, patient characteristics, and adverse events for both AB and OM systems in paired patients.
