Persistent elite controllers as the key model to identify permanent HIV remission.

Curr Opin HIV AIDS

December 2024

Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS), Virgen del Rocio University Hospital, Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), University of Seville, Clinical Unit of Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Parasitology, Seville, Spain.

Purpose Of Review: To summarize the heterogeneity in the elite controllers population with the aim to identify a compatible profile with a persistent HIV remission, making distinction between persistent elite controllers, people with HIV (PWHIV) who permanently maintain virological control in the absence of antiretroviral treatment (ART), and transient elite controllers, PWHIV who eventually lose virological control. For this purpose, it is important to consider the mechanisms and biomarkers that have previously been associated with the maintenance and loss of the natural virological control.

Recent Findings: Transient elite controllers, before losing virological control, exhibit a distinct metabolomic, proteomic, microRNAs (miRNA), immunological and virological profile compared to persistent elite controllers.

December 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Yuhuangding Hospital of Qingdao University, Yantai264000, China Shandong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Otorhinolaryngologic Diseases, Yantai264000, China Yantai Key Laboratory of Otorhinolaryngologic Diseases, Yantai264000, China.

To investigate the clinical characteristics, treatment, and efficacy of spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea (CFR) combined with aspiration pneumonia. In this case series study, a total of 8 patients diagnosed with spontaneous CFR combined with aspiration pneumonia were admitted to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at Yuhuangding Hospital Affiliated with Qingdao University from March 2020 to March 2022. There were 3 males and 5 females, with ages ranging from 45 to 57 years.

Self-Wrinkling-Induced Mechanically Adaptive Patterned Surface of Photocuring Coating for Abrasion Resistance.

Adv Mater

December 2024

School of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, Frontiers Science Center for Transformative Molecules, State Key Laboratory for Metal Matrix Composite Materials, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, 200240, China.

Providing mechanically adaptive performance to surfaces is significant in preserving materials from damage in variable environments, however, it has rarely been studied. Inspired by the mechanically adaptive behaviors of the surface microstructure on the carapace of desert scorpions and bark of desert tamarisks, a self-wrinkled mechanically adaptive patterned surface (SWMAPS) using one-step UV-curing and self-wrinkling technique is reported. Because of the fluorinated polyurethane photo-initiator formed by self-assembly at the top surface, UV-induced photo-crosslinking can spontaneously generate a gradient-crosslinked structure and wrinkled patterns with different morphology.

Article Synopsis
  • - Bone organoids are being developed to study bone growth and diseases, but current methods often fall short because they create simplistic structures that don't mimic real bone well or allow for proper mineralization.
  • - A new approach using 3D printing and a bioink made from bone marrow-derived stem cells aims to create more complex and functional bone structures, which can form bone tissue independently when implanted into mice.
  • - This innovative bone organoid model provides a valuable new platform for researchers to investigate bone development, test therapies, and understand congenital conditions more effectively.

Subclinical mastitis, the asymptomatic inflammation of the udder often caused by bacterial infection, is an important economic and welfare concern in meat-producing flocks. We conducted a longitudinal observational study to: (1) characterize the etiology, prevalence, incidence, and persistence of intramammary infections during the first 8 wk of lactation, and (2) investigate the potential risk factors of lactation stage, parity, and the number of lambs reared. Duplicate milk samples (n = 592) were collected aseptically from each udder half of 37 clinically healthy ewes (9 Hampshire, 22 Polypay, and 6 Targhee) weekly for their first 8 wk of lactation.
