Type 2 diabetes: a sacrifice program handling energy surplus.

Life Metab

December 2024

Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai Clinical Center for Diabetes, Shanghai Diabetes Institute, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Diabetes Mellitus, Shanghai 200233, China.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is closely associated with obesity, while interactions between the two diseases remain to be fully elucidated. To this point, we offer this perspective to introduce a set of new insights into the interpretation of T2DM spanning the etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment approaches. These include a definition of T2DM as an energy surplus-induced diabetes characterized by the gradual decline of β cell insulin secretion function, which ultimately aims to prevent the onset of severe obesity through mechanisms of weight loss.

Objective: To investigate the roles of fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Methods: The levels of SCFAs (acetate, propionate, and butyrate) in 83 patients with PCOS and 63 controls were measured, and their relationships with various metabolic parameters were analyzed. Intestinal microbiome analysis was conducted to identify relevant bacteria.

Impaired SERCA2a phosphorylation causes diabetic cardiomyopathy through impinging on cardiac contractility and precursor protein processing.

Life Metab

August 2022

MOE Key Laboratory of Model Animal for Disease Study, Department of Cardiology, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, The Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School, Model Animal Research Center, School of Medicine, Nanjing University, Nanjing, Jiangsu 210061, China.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is currently a progressive and nonstoppable complication in type 2 diabetic patients. Metabolic insults and insulin resistance are involved in its pathogenesis; however, the underlying mechanisms are still not clearly understood. Here we show that calcium dysregulation can be both a cause and a consequence of cardiac insulin resistance that leads to DCM.

Skin tags, medically known as acrochordons, are harmless growths of the epidermis that commonly develop in areas where the skin folds, such as the neck, armpits, or groin. While usually asymptomatic, these lesions can cause discomfort from rubbing or cosmetic issues. They are more prevalent in middle-aged and older individuals and are often correlated with conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and insulin resistance.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have been developed to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. Although, in the last 10 years, the use of GLP-1 RAs, especially semaglutide and liraglutide, has increased, its clinical implications and how it affects metabolic parameters have yet to be fully consolidated. This narrative review explores the metabolic effects of GLP-1 RAs in weight management, blood glucose, cardiovascular health, lipid profiles, and blood pressure.
