Background: Disturbed white adipose tissue function is important for cardiometabolic risk and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Whether this involves adipose lipid turnover (lipolysis and synthesis of triglycerides) is unknown and was presently investigated in subcutaneous adipose tissue, the body's largest fat depot.
Methods: In cross-sectional studies in 78 subjects, adipose lipid age, representing overall lipid turnover (mobilization and storage), and lipid storage capacity were assessed by the incorporation of atmospheric C into adipose lipids.
The tusk of the male narwhal is a prolonged canine tooth, reaching a size of up to 3 m in length. The tusk erupts through the young narwhal's upper left lip and, over time, develops into an elongated structure composed of dentine growth layers with an outer coating of cementum. In this study, we utilized bomb radiocarbon (C) to estimate the ages of three narwhal tusks, which allowed us to validate the assumption that one growth layer is deposited annually in narwhal tusks.

Seed development requires substantial metabolic resources and is influenced by adverse environmental conditions. However, the ability of plants to produce viable seeds under restrictive conditions suggests the existence of mechanisms that make this process less sensitive to environmental stress. Uncovering their regulation could lead to the development of genotypes better adapted to stressful conditions.

Modeling carbon accumulation in crop plants is key to evaluating the transfer of atmospheric 14C into the edible parts of the plants growing near nuclear facilities. Chinese yam 'Nagaimo' (Dioscorea polystachya Turcz.) is a major crop cultivated near a spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho, Aomori, Japan.

Mycobacterium abscessus is a biofilm-forming, non-tuberculous mycobacterium that is highly resistant to antibiotics. Bacterial efflux pumps contribute to biofilm formation, export of biofilm-associated lipids and antibiotic tolerance. The Resistance Nodulation Cell Division (RND) and ATP-Binding Cassette (ABC) families of efflux pumps export lipids to the mycobacterial cell surface.
