The presence in ecological communities of unfeasible species interactions, termed forbidden links, due to physiological or morphological exploitation barriers has been long debated, but little direct evidence has been found. Forbidden links are likely to make ecological communities less robust to species extinctions, stressing the need to assess their prevalence. Here, we used a dataset of plant-hummingbird interactions, coupled with a Bayesian hierarchical model, to assess the importance of exploitation barriers in determining species interactions.

Background: Neonatal sepsis remains one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality among neonates in developing countries. It can cause severe morbidities and sequelae, even though patients survive. Prolonged recovery time of neonatal sepsis leads to hospitalization, increased cost of treatments, antimicrobial resistance, disseminated intravascular coagulation, respiratory failure, septic shock, brain lesions, renal failure, and cardiovascular dysfunction, and eventually death.

The third most prevalent gynecological cancer globally, following cervical and uterine cancer, and the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. The time ovarian cancer patients have to wait between diagnosis and initiation of treatment are the indicators of quality in cancer care and influence patient outcomes.

Patterns among factors associated with myocardial infarction: chi-squared automatic interaction detection tree and binary logit model.

BMC Public Health

January 2025

Department of Econometrics, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Ataturk University, 2nd Floor, Number: 222, Erzurum, Türkiye.

Background: Although mortality from myocardial infarction (MI) has declined worldwide due to advancements in emergency medical care and evidence-based pharmacological treatments, MI remains a significant contributor to global cardiovascular morbidity. This study aims to examine the risk factors associated with individuals who have experienced an MI in Türkiye.

Methods: Microdata obtained from the Türkiye Health Survey conducted by Turkish Statistical Institute in 2019 were used in this study.

The Alertapnée study followed 555 adults with obstructive sleep apnea treated with CPAP and found that the occurrence of Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR) was linked to a 14-fold increase in the risk of significant cardiac events (SCE) after one year. However, the progression and clinical significance of CSR episodes over time remain unclear. This ancillary study aimed to assess CSR progression and clinical outcomes during a second year of follow-up in 66 patients who had experienced at least one CSR episode in the first year.
