In uremic patients, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) loses its anti-inflammatory features and can even become pro-inflammatory due to an altered protein composition. In chronic kidney disease (CKD), impaired functions of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNLs) contribute to inflammation and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This study investigated the effect of HDL from CKD and hemodialysis (HD) patients on the CD14 expression on PMNLs.

Sperm sexing with density gradient centrifugation in dogs.

Anim Reprod Sci

December 2018

Department of Animal Reproduction and Veterinary Radiology, College of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, São Paulo State University, Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil.

Sexed sperm in dogs is of interest because of being polytocous, and as a result, the greatest number of offspring of the same sex can improve the market, although few studies assessing sperm sexing have been performed in this species. The present study, therefore, was conducted to evaluate the effects on sperm quality and the effectiveness of three discontinuous density gradients to separate dog sperm containing X and Y chromosomes. Thirty ejaculates from ten adult dogs were collected by digital manipulation of the penis.

Background: With the discontinuation of the last generation of apheresis machines, new options for monocyte apheresis became available. As apheresis products play a crucial role in the generation of new cellular therapeutics (e.g.

Background: Besides maintaining intracellular glutathione stores, gamma-glutamyltransferase(GGT) generates reactive oxygen species and activates NFkB, a redox-sensitive transcription factor key in the induction of Tissue Factor (TF) gene expression, the principal initiator of the clotting cascade. Thus, GGT might be involved in TF-mediated coagulation processes, an assumption untested insofar.

Methods: Experiments were run with either equine, enzymatically active GGT or human recombinant (hr) GGT, a wheat germ-derived protein enzymatically inert because of missing post-translational glycosylation.

Purpose We compared the pre- and post-irradiation viability and cytotoxicity of human peripheral natural killer cell (NK) populations obtained using different isolation methods. Material and methods Three methods were used to enrich total NK cells from buffy coats: (I) a Ficoll-Paque gradient, plastic adherence and a nylon wool column; (II) a discontinuous Percoll gradient; or (III) the Dynal NK cell isolation kit. Subsequently, CD16(+) and CD56(+) NK cell subsets were collected using (IV) flow cytometry or (V) magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS) NK cell isolation kits.
