Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) are frequently used as translational animal models for human diseases. However, a comparative study of cytological and histochemical detection methods as well as morphometric and ultrastructural characterization of neutrophils and eosinophils in this species is lacking. Blood samples of house dust mite sensitized and allergen challenged as well as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenged marmosets were analyzed with different cytological and histological staining methods.

It will be vital to the practical activity of every forensic and/or clinical pathologist to be able to answer three questions regarding the reconstruction of a lethal event: the type and cause of death, as well as the survival time. The authors offer an overview of the application of selected morphological techniques in general forensic neuropathology, techniques that provide answers to some of the main questions in forensic neurotraumatology. The methods are illustrated by individual cases of lethal gunshot injury to the head from low velocity handguns.

Previous investigations failed to demonstrate mast cells in the alimentary tract and extraparietal glands of the ferret. It was decided therefore to test this and assess factors that may be of influence. Major salivary glands and tongues of mature ferrets, which had been fixed in formalin-calcium, were examined by means of light microscopical histochemistry.

Context: Placental transmogrification of the lung is a term introduced to describe a peculiar histologic pattern characterized by formation of placental villuslike structures in the lung parenchyma. It has been reported to occur in association with bullous emphysema and lipomatosis.
Objectives: To study the relationship between placental transmogrification and pulmonary hamartomas.

Gunshot wounds to the brain usually lead to acute respiratory arrest or death after a brief survival period, even in cases involving only slight direct tissue damage. It can be assumed therefore that the damage extends beyond the zone of recognizable destruction and hemorrhages. To determine the true extent of the tissue injury resulting from gunshot wounds to the brain, we carried out microscopic investigations for reactive changes (emigration of leukocytes and macrophages, axonal expression of beta-amyloid precursor protein (beta-APP) in 10 cases of gunshot wound to the narrow channel of the brain with survival times >2h.
