Neuromodulatory afferents to thalamic nuclei are key for information transmission and thus play critical roles in sensory, motor, and limbic processes. Over the course of the last decades, diverse attempts have been made to map and describe subcortical neuromodulatory afferents to the primate thalamus, including axons using acetylcholine, serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline, and histamine. Our group has been actively involved in this endeavor.

Interaction of Streptococcus pneumoniae with the surface of endothelial cells is mediated in blood flow via mechanosensitive proteins such as the Von Willebrand Factor (VWF). This glycoprotein changes its molecular conformation in response to shear stress, thereby exposing binding sites for a broad spectrum of host-ligand interactions. In general, culturing of primary endothelial cells under a defined shear flow is known to promote the specific cellular differentiation and the formation of a stable and tightly linked endothelial layer resembling the physiology of the inner lining of a blood vessel.

Cephalopods are nontraditional but captivating models of invertebrate neurobiology, particularly in evolutionary comparisons. Cephalopod olfactory systems have striking similarities and fundamental differences with vertebrates, arthropods, and gastropods, raising questions about the ancestral origins of those systems. We describe here the organization and development of the olfactory system of the common cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization.

Aiming at improving reliability and tedious analysis time in conventional cell membrane chromatography, an improved bioaffinity sample pretreatment technique with enhanced stability was developed to fast screen and extract potential allergenic components from traditional Chinese medicine injections. In this study, rat basophilic leukemia-2H3 cell membrane coated silica particles (RBL-2H3/CMCSPs) were fabricated by irreversible adsorption between the cell membrane and silica and self-fusion of the cell membrane, which could simulate drug-receptor interactions in vitro. Also, benefiting from the use of paraformaldehyde, the average recoveries of the six batches of RBL/CMCSPs were 90.
