Background: The ongoing crisis related to non-medical use of opioids makes it of continued importance to understand the risk factors for opioid addiction, the behavioral and neurobiological consequences of opioid exposure and to seek potential avenues for therapy. Pre-clinical rodent models have been critical to advancing understanding of opioid consequences for decades, but have been mostly limited to drug delivery by injection or by oral dosing. Inhalation, a significant route for many human users, has not been as well-established.

Gastroparesis is a common symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD) and whether any change occurs in gastric smooth muscle cells (SMCs) of PD patients is unclear. We previously reported that rats with bilateral substantia nigra lesions induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), referred to as 6-OHDA rats, manifest typical gastroparesis. In the present study, we further investigate the underlying mechanism.

Purpose: Circadian regulation via the suprachiasmatic nuclei and rest-activity state may influence expression of limbic seizures.
Methods: Male rats (n = 14) were made epileptic by electrical stimulation of the hippocampus, causing limbic status epilepticus and subsequent seizures. We monitored seizures with intrahippocampal electrodes in 12-12-h light/dark (LD) cycles and in continuous dark (DD).
Phasic instantaneous left ventricular blood velocity was measured by radiotelemetry in 28 subjects with a Doppler ultrasonic flowmeter catheter during atrial pacing and induced A-V block Type I Wenckebach A-V block with conduction ratios of 9:8 or lower generally produced a stepwise reduction of peak left ventricular blood velocity in relation to shortened R-R intervals. Longer Wenckebach periods resulted in little or no blood velocity alteration during 1:1 A-V conduction. Those beats following a blocked atrial depolarization were associated with augmented blood velocities.

Blood velocity alternation was more manifest at faster pacing rates. Four patients demonstrated diastolic blood velocity alternans at the mitral valve.
