Hypertriglyceridemia has serious health risks such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, nephropathy, and others. Fenofibrate is an effective hypolipidemic drug, but its benefits for ameliorating disorders associated with hypertriglyceridemia failed to be proven in clinical trials. To search for possible causes of this situation and possibilities of their favorable influence, we tested the effect of FF monotherapy and the combination of fenofibrate with silymarin on metabolic disorders in a unique model of hereditary hypertriglyceridemic rats (HHTg).

Adult growth hormone deficiency (AGHD) is often accompanied with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Although some studies reported that MASLD is ameliorated by growth hormone replacement therapy (GHRT), the characteristics of AGHD that are associated with an improvement of hepatic steatosis by GHRT remain unknown. We aimed to investigate whether GHRT affects hepatic lipid accumulation as well as biochemical parameters, and investigated the association between these parameters (UMIN000044989).

Article Synopsis
  • The case discusses a 36-year-old man who developed a severe visceral disseminated varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection after starting immunosuppressive therapy for lupus nephritis, leading to a rapid decline in health and multiple organ failure.
  • Key symptoms included severe abdominal pain, blistering rashes, hyperferritinemia, and laboratory signs indicating hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), ultimately resulting in the patient's death.
  • This case highlights the rare but critical complication of VZV infections in patients receiving specific immunosuppressive treatments, stressing the importance of early diagnosis through VZV-DNA testing.

Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, now known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is a phenotype of the metabolic syndrome in the liver and is clearly associated with metabolic abnormalities such as hyperglycaemia and dyslipidaemia. Although the prevalence of MASLD is increasing worldwide, there is currently no consensus on the efficacy and safety of the drugs used to treat MASLD/metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Pemafibrate, a selective peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha modulator, was designed to have higher peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alfa (PPARα) agonist activity and selectivity than existing PPARα agonists, and in development trials, without increasing creatinine levels, lipid parameters and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were significantly improved.
