Brain biopsy is commonly employed for the histological diagnosis of complex intracranial diseases. To improve the positive diagnostic rate, the precision of intraoperative tissue sampling is critical. This study evaluated the accuracy of fluorescence imaging technology in rapidly distinguishing tumours from nontumour tissue during surgery, thus providing real-time feedback to surgeons and optimizing the surgical workflow.

Objective: This study was to employ 18F-flurodeoxyglucose (FDG-PET) to evaluate the resting-state brain glucose metabolism in a sample of 46 patients diagnosed with disorders of consciousness (DoC). The aim was to identify objective quantitative metabolic indicators and predictors that could potentially indicate the level of awareness in these patients.

Methods: A cohort of 46 patients underwent Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) assessments in order to distinguish between the minimally conscious state (MCS) and the unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS).

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most commonly occurring brain disorder, characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau, subsequently leading to neurocognitive decline. 3-Amino-1-propanesulfonic acid (TPS) and its prodrug, currently under clinical trial III, serve as promising therapeutic agents targeting Aβ pathology by specifically preventing monomer-to-oligomer formation. Inspired by the potency of TPS prodrug, we hypothesized that conjugating TPS with human serum albumin (HSA) could enhance brain delivery and synergistically inhibit Aβ aggregation in mild to moderate AD.

Neural processing of auditory stimuli in rats: translational aspects using auditory oddball paradigms.

Behav Brain Res

January 2025

Department of Neurosurgery, Hannover Medical School, Carl-Neuberg-Straße 1, 30625 Hannover, Germany; Cluster of Excellence Hearing4all, German Research Foundation, Hannover, Germany; Center for Systems Neuroscience (ZSN) Hannover, 30559 Hannover, Germany.

Background: The three-class oddball paradigm allows to investigate the processing of behaviorally relevant and irrelevant auditory stimuli. In humans, event-related potentials (ERPs) are used as neural correlate of behavior. We recorded local field potentials (LFPs) within the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in rats during three-class and passive two-class oddball paradigms and analyzed the ERPs focusing on similarities to human recordings.

Enhancing Neuron Activity Promotes Functional Recovery by Inhibiting Microglia-Mediated Synapse Elimination After Stroke.

Stroke

January 2025

New Drug Screening Center, State Key Laboratory of Natural Medicines, China Pharmaceutical University, Nanjing, China (H.S., H.W., C.W., G.L., M.H., H.Z., F.H., H.L.).

Background: Activating glutamatergic neurons in the ipsilesional motor cortex can promote functional recovery after stroke. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Clarifying key molecular mechanisms involved in recovery could help understand the development of neuromodulation strategies after stroke.
