Fetal malpresentation, malposition, and asynclitism are among the most common determinants of a protracted active phase of labor, arrest of dilatation during the first stage, and arrest of descent in the second stage. The diagnosis of these conditions is traditionally based on vaginal examination, which is subjective and poorly reproducible. Intrapartum sonography has been demonstrated to yield higher accuracy than vaginal examination in characterizing fetal malposition, and some guidelines endorse its use for the verification of the occiput position before performing an instrumental delivery.

Background: Cervical cerclage is an effective intervention to prevent preterm birth among individuals with a history of cervical insufficiency, individuals with a short cervix and history of preterm birth, or individuals with second-trimester painless dilation. Although cerclage reduces the mechanical stress on the cervix by reinforcing it with sutures, cerclage could also cause scarring of the cervix, which may affect the progress of labor.
Objective: This study aimed to compare the labor curves between individuals who underwent cerclage and those who did not undergo cerclage.
Human body odors (HBOs) are powerful stimuli that can affect emotional, cognitive and behavioral processes. However, the characterization of the physiological response to HBOs is still to be fully investigated. Here, we analyzed the self-assessed emotion perception and the EEG event-related potentials (ERP) on 17 healthy young women during a simultaneous visual-olfactory stimulation.

Background: Protracted labor is associated with an elevated risk of maternal and fetal complications. Results of randomized controlled trials on the efficacy in labor of phloroglucinol (PHL), a pure antispasmodic drug, are uncertain.
Objectives: To evaluate whether PHL is effective in shortening the first stage of labor.

Background: Protracted bacterial bronchitis (PBB) is a leading cause of chronic wet cough in children. The current standard treatment in European and American guidelines is 2 weeks of antibiotics, but the optimal duration of therapy is unknown. We describe the first randomised controlled trial to assess the duration of antibiotic treatment in children with chronic wet cough and suspected PBB.
