Mycophage endolysins are highly diverse and modular enzymes composed of domains involved in peptidoglycan binding and degradation. Mostly, they are characterized by a three-module design: an N-terminal peptidase domain, a central catalytic domain and a C-terminal peptidoglycan binding domain. Previously, the affinity of cell wall binding domains (CBDs) to the mycobacterial peptidoglycan layer was shown for some of these endolysins.

Tentative studies of Malaise trap samples from different geographic regions and habitats indicate unanimously that Winnertzia, a genus of mycophagous gall midges (Cecidomyiidae), is exceptionally speciose, but hard data in proof of that were previously unavailable. A taxonomic inventory of mycophagous cecidomyiids in Sweden has now revealed that, of 751 species found in total, 93 are Winnertzia. A preliminary census in 2013 had identified only 26 different Winnertzia in Sweden.

We have now evaluated the activation of both the (2'-5')An polymerase and protein kinase by a large variety of polynucleotides, triple-stranded and synthetic dsRNAs, homopolymers, alternating copolymers, triple-stranded polymers, purine-purine duplexes and purine-pyrimidine duplexes with modifications at either the pyrimidine or ribose moieties. All these polynucleotides have been the subject of previous interferon induction studies.

Double-stranded RNA melting is independent of base compositions in 3.5 M Et4NCl and 4.

Mycophages DNAIII, Legendre and Clark, isolated from sarcoid material by Mankiewicz, belongs with respect to their ultrastructural morphology, to the systematic group B according to Bradley or to group IV according to Tikhonenko. These phages contain 2-DNA, their head is a regular icosahedron, the tail consisting of a helix of protein subunits is attached to the head by a narrowed segment and is fixed in it by means of a disc-like structure. It is terminated by a ball-shoped or conical end structure.
