Phylogenetic analysis and transmission networks highlight the role of older adults in the transmission of HIV-1 in northern Zhejiang, China.

Virol J

Department of AIDS and STD Prevention and Control, Zhejiang Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 3399 Binsheng Road, Binjiang District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, 310051, P. R. China.

Background: In China, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) poses a significant challenge to older heterosexual adults. This study explored the transmission dynamics of HIV infection among older adults in northern Zhejiang Province, China using phylogenetic analysis and transmission networks.

Methods: HIV pol sequences without any antiretroviral therapy were obtained from newly diagnosed HIV-positive patients in Huzhou between 2017 and 2022.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are gene regulators essential for cell homeostasis, their alteration is related to a pathological state, including infectious diseases like COVID-19. Identifying an altered profile of circulating miRNAs in mild COVID-19 may enhance our knowledge of the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 and the range of clinical phenotypes. In the present study, a miRNA screening was performed by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), and the expression levels of 13 resulting miRNAs were validated through RT-qPCR in the serum of 40 mild cases compared to 29 non-infected individuals.

Medicinal plants, mushrooms, and endophytes offer a rich source of secondary metabolites (SMs), including flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and terpenoids, with proven antiviral properties against SARS-CoV-2. Plant-associated microorganisms that colonize in living tissues of different parts of a plant possess the ability to produce SMs of immense therapeutic value and this biological interaction between plants and microbes can be exploited to develop antiviral drugs against SARS-CoV-2. The unprecedented lethality of the SARS-CoV-2 virus during the recent global pandemic has prompted extensive research into new treatment options and preventive strategies for COVID-19.

The humoral and cellular immune response are the key players in preventing viral infection and limiting disease severity, particular in the context of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and coronavirus disease 2019. In this review, we discuss how immune responses generated by prior infection and vaccination influence the outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection. We aim to provide an overview of the role of humoral and cellular immunity, with a particular focus on CD8 T cell responses, to delineate how different immune compartments contribute to the control of infection and modulation of disease outcomes.
