A serological survey, involving indirect immunofluorescence testing of blood sera samples, was carried out on the residents of one in every five dwellings in the town of Barcelos (in the northern part of the State of Amazonas, on the right bank of the Rio Negro, 490 Km from Manaus by river) and on the rural populations of the villages of Piloto and Marará (also on the right bank of the Rio Negro, 30 minutes by boat from Barcelos). A total of 710 sera samples were tested, 628 from the resident population in the town of Barcelos, 35 from Piloto and 47 from Marará. Cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage was induced in the squirrel monkey in order to evaluate the involvement of cerebrovascular sensory nerves in the development of the vasospasm. A unilateral surgical section of the trigeminal nerve at post- but not at pre-Gasserian level caused constriction of the major ipsilateral cerebral arteries. A pre- or postganglionic trigeminal lesion induced an increased glucose uptake globally without influencing the cerebral blood flow.

Four of 15 monoclonal human IgM rheumatoid factors (RF) derived from synovial B cells of patients with rheumatoid arthritis showed positive ELISA reactions with human beta 2-microglobulin. These findings were different from those previously noted using IgM RF derived from monoclonal Waldenstrom's paraproteins or the IgM components of mixed cryoglobulins, and resembled the anti-beta 2 microglobulin specificity of polyclonal IgM RF from patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Reactions of monoclonal IgM synovial RF with overlapping 7-mers of beta 2m sequence indicated major regions of positive reactivity at positions 57-64 and 89-95 which were maintained in the presence of high salt (300 mM NaCl) conditions.

The agglutinating activity was specific for a determinant that was not present on the untreated, native immunoglobulin. It was found most frequently in sera from rheumatoid arthritis patients and its titre showed some correlation with disease activity.

Cerebrovascular changes after intrathecal (ith) administration of gammaglobulins against substance P (SP) or calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) were investigated before and following a simulated subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) in the squirrel monkey. The SAH was produced by injection of homologous blood into the interpeduncular fossa and the cisterna magna. The gammaglobulins were given both prior to the blood injections and daily in 5 days post-SAH.
