Hemosiderin deposition and vascular inflammation were evaluated in muscle specimens from 50 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals with neuromuscular symptoms. Iron deposits were detected in 25 of 50 cases, and were found more frequently in the distal muscles of lower limbs than in proximal muscles (22 of 30 cases v three of 20 cases; P less than .001).

Ultrastructural studies of 17 primary malignant CNS lymphomas revealed 6 tumors with abnormal intracytoplasmic and/or intranuclear membranous structures, most frequently associated with the endoplasmic reticulum or perinuclear envelope. In most cases, tubuloreticular inclusions and paired cisternae were present. Less frequent were accumulation of microtubules, concentric lamellar bodies, and rod-like or paracrystalline intranuclear inclusions.

Control Group C consisted of patients with heroin-associated nephropathy (HAN) with proteinuria comparable to patients in Group A but without AIDS or its related complex (ARC). The most frequent finding, common to both AAN and HAN, was focal glomerular sclerosis.

Ultrastructural changes in the human epitumorous cerebral cortex were examined. A swelling of nerve cell perikarya, dendrites and axon terminals, and an occasional hyperplasia and disarray of microtubules and neurofilaments were observed. Accumulations of lysosomes, tubuloreticular structures and intracytoplasmic or intramitochondrial crystalloid inclusions were also found.
