This study evaluated the biocompatibility of dense and porous forms of Poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), and their 75/25 blend for bone tissue engineering applications. The biomaterials were characterized morphologically using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the thickness and porosity of the scaffolds were determined. Functional assessments of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) included the MTT assay, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) production, and morphological and cytochemical analyses.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the cytotoxic effects of methylglyoxal (MGO) on human-derived 3D neuronal spheroids, a model that mimics human brain cells, particularly in relation to aging and neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Results show that MGO leads to decreased cell viability and growth at low concentrations, with significant cellular damage observed at higher doses, including necrosis and apoptosis.
  • The findings highlight the potential of using these complex 3D models to evaluate the impact of MGO and other harmful agents, providing insights into mechanisms of neurodegeneration and aging.

Cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of a pendimethalin-based herbicide in Apis mellifera.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

July 2024

University of Calabria, Department of Biology, Ecology and Earth Science, Rende, Italy. Electronic address:

Public concern about the effects of pesticides on non-target organisms has increased in the recent years. Nevertheless, there is a limited number of studies that address the actual toxic effects of herbicides on insects. This study investigated the side effects of herbicides on non-target organisms inhabiting agroecosystems and performing essential ecological and economic functions such as crop pollination.

Background: Leukaemia can be reliably diagnosed and classified by the simultaneous application of multiple techniques. Cytochemical stains that are cheap and do not require any special instruments are very important in developing countries for the diagnosis of acute leukaemia (AL).

Aim: To diagnose AL in all suspected cases by flow cytometry and to correlate the diagnosis with morphological and special staining like myeloperoxidase (MPO) and periodic acid-Sciff (PAS) techniques.

Osteosarcoma of the wing in a sulfur-crested cockatoo.

Vet Clin Pathol

March 2024

Department of Population Health and Pathobiology, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA.

A 26-year-old female sulfur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) was evaluated for vocalizing through the night and extending her right wing. Physical examination revealed a large, firm mass extending from the humerus to the distal aspect of the elbow. Computed tomography confirmed a large aggressive mass of the right distal humerus with a large soft tissue component, severe osteolysis, and adjacent periosteal proliferation.
