Purpose: To report a detailed spectroscopic analysis of explanted hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs) that were removed because of postoperative opacification of the lens optic.

Methods: Thirteen Hydroview H60M (Bausch & Lomb Surgical) IOLs were explanted from 13 different patients on average 56 months after phacoemulsification and IOL implantation. All patients had decreased visual acuity because of a fine granularity of the optical surface of the IOLs.

Although the submandibular gland of ferret is useful for studying salivary secretory processes which are regulated by nerves and involve myoepithelial activity, little attention has been paid to its parenchymal innervation and myoepithelial arrangements. Therefore, glands obtained postmortem from mature ferrets of both sexes were here examined with the use of light-microscopic histochemical techniques for cholinesterases, phosphatases and phosphorylase, histofluorescence for catecholamines, and milling dyes. Acetylcholinesterase staining was associated with nerve trunks in the interlobular stroma and an extensive intralobular network of nerve fibres, presumably of a cholinergic type, embracing acini and ducts.

The limitations of post mortem detection of early myocardial infarction by hematoxylin and eosin staining stimulated a search for the development of improved diagnostic methods based on biochemical and morphologic changes. Methods used and/or investigated included electron microscopic examination, gross and microscopic histochemical stains (tetrazolium salts, phosphotungstic acid-hematoxylin, trichrome, periodic acid-Schiff, hematoxylin-basic fuchsin-picric acid), fluorescence, immunohistochemical techniques, and chemical analysis of pericardial fluid. This practical review, designed for both forensic and hospital-based autopsy pathologists, examines the methods available for post mortem diagnosis of myocardial infarction for cases in which death might have occurred before the evolution of changes detectable by hematoxylin and eosin staining.

The distribution of nerves and mast cells was studied in the lacrimal glands of 3-5-, 14- and 24-month-old rats, using light microscopic histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. In 14-month and, to a greater extent, in 24-month-old rats there were signs of chronic inflammation and patchy destruction of acinar, ductal and vascular tissue. The glands of the three different age groups contained acetylcholinesterase (AChE), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-, neuropeptide Y (NPY)-, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-, tyrosine hydroxylase-, substance P- and the phosphoprotein B-50-immunoreactive nerves.
