The internal elastic lamina (iel.) of the anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery, and the internal mammary artery, were studied in 166 unselected subjects of different ages and races. The coronary artery showed substantial defects in the iel. even in the first few years of life, while the iel. of the mammary artery showed only minimal defects in all age groups. The defects in the iel. were associated with the presence of medial cells in the intima, and the thickness of the intima was correlated with the magnitude of the defects in the iel. (Correlation coefficient 0.95 for the coronary artery and 0.80 for the mammary artery). Small arteries involved in chronic inflammatory or neoplastic disease showed a similar relationship if the vessel were present in an edematous area. These vessels which do not usually show intimal thickening, displayed a thickened intima in the vicinity of defects of the iel. It is suggested that the pronounced difference in the incidence of arteriosclerosis between the coronary and internal mammary arteries is related to these defects in the internal elastic lamina.

Dietary fiber strongly impacts the microbiota. Here, we show that a low-fiber diet changes the small intestinal (SI) microbiota and impairs SI Th17, TCRαβCD8αβ and TCRαβCD8αα intraepithelial T cell development. We restore T cell development with dietary fiber supplementation, but this defect becomes persistent over generations with constant low-fiber diets.

Snake venoms have a complex mixture of compounds that are conserved across species and act synergistically, triggering severe local and systemic effects. Identification of the toxin classes that are most damaging to cell homeostasis would be a powerful approach to focus on the main activities that underpin envenomation. Here, we focus on the venom of Bothrops atrox, snake responsible for most of the accidents in Amazon region of South America.

CD8αα+ intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (iIELs) are known for their unique role in keeping the integrity of the intestinal epithelial barrier, but factors affecting the development of these cells have not been thoroughly understood. Here, we found that the transcriptional regulator interferon regulatory factor-2 (IRF-2) plays a cell-intrinsic, indispensable role in establishing iIEL populations. CD8αα+, but not CD8αβ+, iIELs bearing TCRαβ or TCRγδ were severely reduced in numbers in mice lacking this factor (Irf2-/- mice).

Background: To characterise the phenotype and genetic defects of isolated ectopia lentis (IEL) and to determine the gene mutation frequencies in a Chinese congenital ectopia lentis (CEL) cohort.
Methods: In total, 127 Chinese probands with a clinical CEL diagnosis were recruited for this study and underwent ocular and systemic examinations. Whole-exome sequencing was used to detect variants, and Sanger sequencing and bioinformatics analysis verified the pathogenic mutations.
