A peculiar case of mobile right atrial mass thrombotic in origin identified by two-dimensional echocardiography is reported. By the characteristics of the mass and the negative history for SBE and malignant neoplasm, the possibilities of tricuspid vegetations or infiltration by an extracardiac tumor could be reasonably ruled out. On the other hand, a myxomatous mass could not be excluded in this case. The thrombotic nature of the mass was recognized at autopsy. The possibility to identify by two-dimensional echocardiography right atrial masses together with the difficulties in certain particular cases to recognize their nature are discussed.

TBCK (TBC1 Domain-Containing Kinase) encodes a protein playing a role in actin organization and cell growth/proliferation via the mTOR signaling pathway. Deleterious biallelic TBCK variants cause Hypotonia, infantile, with psychomotor retardation and characteristic facies 3. We report on three affected sibs, also displaying cardiac malformations.

Interventricular septal dissection secondary to acute inferior myocardial infarction: case series and literature review.

J Cardiothorac Surg

January 2025

Echocardiography and Vascular Ultrasound Center, The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, 79 Qingchun Road, Hangzhou, 310003, China.

Background: Interventricular septal dissection is a critical disease characterized by the separation of the intraventricular septum into two layers, forming an intermediate layer with a cystic cavity that communicates with the root of the aorta or ventricle. It has low morbidity and high mortality rates.

Case Presentation: Case 1: A 58-year-old male with a history of hypertension and smoking presented to a local hospital due to chest tightness and pain for 4 days.

Functional mitral regurgitation is characterized by normal structures of the mitral valve and chordae tendinea, but the regurgitation occurs due to geometric changes in the left atrium and left ventricle. This condition can contribute to heart failure progression and lead to a poor prognosis. Functional mitral regurgitation is found in approximately one-third of patients with heart failure with a decreased ejection fraction.

Increased thrombotic events that occur in up to one-third of patients with COVID-19 are predominantly pulmonary emboli (PE), which are associated with higher severity and increased mortality. Acute PE should therefore be one of the main differential diagnoses among patients with hemodynamic instability. Early treatment of such a condition with systemic thrombolysis remains the first line of treatment especially in patients with COVID-19, which hinders further invasive intervention.

Regional Image Quality Scoring for 2-D Echocardiography Using Deep Learning.

Ultrasound Med Biol

January 2025

Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging, Norwegian University of Science and Technology - NTNU, Trondheim, Norway; Health Research, SINTEF, Trondheim, Norway.

Objective: To develop and compare methods to automatically estimate regional ultrasound image quality for echocardiography separate from view correctness.

Methods: Three methods for estimating image quality were developed: (i) classic pixel-based metric: the generalized contrast-to-noise ratio (gCNR), computed on myocardial segments (region of interest) and left ventricle lumen (background), extracted by a U-Net segmentation model; (ii) local image coherence: the average local coherence as predicted by a U-Net model that predicts image coherence from B-mode ultrasound images at the pixel level; (iii) deep convolutional network: an end-to-end deep-learning model that predicts the quality of each region in the image directly. These methods were evaluated against manual regional quality annotations provided by three experienced cardiologists.
