Thirteen patients with heart myxomas (11 myxomas of the left atrium, 1 myxoma of the right atrium, 1 myxoma of the right ventricle) were placed under observation. The clinical manifestations of the myxomas were many and varied and depended on the site, size and mobility of tumor, the presence or lack of autoimmune processes (arthritis, pericarditis, myocarditis), and embolic complications. A high diagnostic value of one- and two-dimensional echocardiography is noted in the diagnosis of myxomas. In view of a possibility of radical surgical treatment early diagnosis of myxomas assumes the leading role for the disease prognosis.

Background: The differential diagnosis of cardiac myxomas (CM), the most common benign primary cardiac tumors, is broad and a thorough diagnostic workup is required to establish accurate diagnosis prior to surgical resection. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is usually the first imaging modality used for diagnosis of suspected CM. In a single tertiary centre study, we sought to determine the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of TTE in the diagnosis of CM and to determine echocardiographic characteristics indicative of CM.

Cardiac myxomas are benign tumors of the heart. They occur mostly in the left atrium. The preferred treatment is surgical resection, which can be performed via conventional median sternotomy, minimally invasive, or robotic-assisted approaches.

BACKGROUND Primary cardiac malignancies are extremely rare, with an incidence of 0.07% on autopsy series. Primary sarcomas represent up to 95% of malignant neoplasms, with myxofibrosarcomas accounting for only 10%.

Cardiac myxomas, the most common primary cardiac tumors, are believed to originate from multipotent mesenchymal cells. Approximately 75% of myxomas occur within the left atrium, increasing the risk of systemic thromboembolic events. While typically benign, atrial myxomas can rarely metastasize to the brain, with fewer than 60 cases reported.
