A method of data reduction for the statistical examination of mean arterial pressure in essential hypertensive subjects to determine salt sensitivity was examined. A computerized method was used to estimate the best-fitting cosine curve for data collected every 30 minutes for 24 hours. The effect of sodium loading on the cosinor parameters (mesor, amplitude, and acrophase) in 45 subjects with essential hypertension and five normotensive control subjects was assessed. Twenty-five percent of the essential hypertensive subjects in the study were found to be salt-sensitive with a statistically significant increase in their mesors with sodium loading (p less than 0.05). The non-salt-sensitive group was found to contain a subpopulation with a statistically significant decrease in their mesor with sodium loading (p less than 0.05). Sodium loading appears to affect the lability of mean arterial pressure independently of mesor changes.

pH-sensitive chitosan/sodium alginate/calcium chloride hydrogel beads for potential oral delivery of rice bran bioactive peptides.

Although rice bran active peptide (RBAP) has potent antioxidant properties, its practical applications have been limited by its low bioavailability. In this study, we hypothesized that pH-responsive hydrogels prepared from the ionic gelation between chitosan and alginate could be a promising delivery system of short-chain peptides, like RBAP, for protecting them from chemical degradation during digestion and improving their functionality. The hydrogel beads retained RBAP in the gastric environment due to strong interactions between two biopolymers and RBAP, followed by a sustained release of more than 70 % peptide in the intestinal condition, thus improving its gastrointestinal stability.

Arsenic (As) is a non-essential carcinogenic metalloid and an issue of concern for rice crops. This study investigated the effects of sulfur-loaded tea waste biochar (TWB) due to modification with sodium sulfide (SSTWB) or thiourea (TUTWB) on As stress and accumulation in rice plants. The results showed that sulfur-modified TWB improved plant morphology compared to plants grown in As-contaminated soil alone.

Chronic wounds represent a persistent clinical challenge due to prolonged inflammation and impaired tissue repair mechanisms. Cannabidiol (CBD), recognized for its anti-inflammatory and pro-healing properties, shows therapeutic promise in wound care. However, its delivery via lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) remains challenging due to CBD's inherent instability and low bioavailability.

Ionic Crosslinking of Linear Polyethyleneimine Hydrogels with Tripolyphosphate.

Gels

December 2024

Universidad de Buenos Aires, Facultad de Farmacia y Bioquímica, Departamento de Ciencias Químicas, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires 1113, Argentina.

In this work, the mechanical properties of hydrogels based on linear polyethyleneimine (PEI) chemically crosslinked with ethyleneglycoldiglycidyl ether (EGDE) were improved by the ionic crosslinking with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP). To this end, the quaternization of the nitrogen atoms present in the PEI structure was conducted to render a network with a permanent positive charge to interact with the negative charges of TPP. The co-crosslinking process was studied by H high-resolution magic angle spinning (H HRMAS) NMR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in combination with organic elemental analysis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

Plant-derived antibacterial agents are increasingly pivotal in mitigating the escalating threat posed by pathogenic microorganisms. Dihydromyricetin (DMY), a plant bioactive compound prevalent in Ampelopsis grossedentata, exhibits remarkable antibacterial properties. However, its poor solubility in water significantly hinders its application in antibacterial therapies, necessitating the exploration of suitable carriers for the loading and sustained release of DMY.
