Bile duct ligation in male rats for two weeks led to a marked increase in both serum sorbitol dehydrogenase activity and serum bile acid concentration indicating cholestatic liver injury. Furthermore, a rise in the hepatic hydroxyproline level indicating collagen accumulation was observed. As a consequence of these alterations, the hepatic microsomal mixed-function oxidase system was impaired as evidenced by a decrease in cytochrome P-450 content and in the activities of NADPH-cytochrome c reductase and aminopyrine-demethylase. While the hepatic glutathione content remained unaffected, the cytosolic GSH S-transferase activity was clearly suppressed due to subchronic cholestasis.

To evaluate and compare the safety of four selenium supplements, namely Se-enriched peptides (SeP), yeast selenium (SeY), L-Se-methylselenocysteine (L-SeMc) and sodium selenite (NaSeO), the subchronic toxicity study was designed by 90-day gavage administration in Sprague-Dawley rats. The doses of SeP, SeY, L-SeMc and NaSeO were 0.15, 0.

Microcystins (MC) are hepatotoxic for organisms. Liver MC accumulation and structural change are intensely studied, but the functional hepatic enzymes and energy metabolism have received little attention. This study investigated the liver and hepatocyte structures and the activity of key hepatic functional enzymes with emphasis on energetic metabolism changes after subchronic fish exposure to cyanobacterial crude extract (CE) containing MC.

Chlorpyrifos (CPF), an organophosphorus pesticide (OP), has been implicated in metabolic diseases; however, the data are controversial. Rising age has been found as a main risk factor for metabolic diseases, and it has been proposed that advanced age increases susceptibility to the toxic effects of OPs. Therefore, this investigation aimed to evaluate the impact of CPF on hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, and inflammation in animals with different ages.

We investigated the effects of sub-chronic exposure to Kalach 360 SL (KL), glyphosate-based herbicide used in Tunisia, on liver and hematological system in different groups of female rats. Group 1 was used as a control, while animals of groups 2 and 3 received orally 0.07 mL and 0.

HIV/AIDS patients have suppressed immune system, making them vulnerable to many opportunistic infections including tuberculosis (TB). The patients who are co-infected with TB undergo combined regimens with anti-retroviral drugs such as zidovudine (AZT) and anti-tubercular drug such as isoniazid (INH) for therapy leading to hepatotoxicty. Silibinin (SBN), extracted from Silybum marianum commonly called as "Milk thistle" is used against several drugs-induced hepatotoxicity.
