Article Abstract

In an attempt to reach a definite preoperative diagnosis of solitary, solid, breast lesions, data collected in our Institute during the last year was analyzed and confirmed the possibility of obtaining adequate cytologic and histologic specimens with fine-needle aspiration. When this is used in association with conventional cytologic examination the sensitivity of the procedure is increased from 73% to 78%. In 14% of cases, these combined aspiration techniques provided extra information concerning the histotype and infiltration of the tumor which was not obtainable with cytology alone.

Chronic low back pain (cLBP) lacks clear physiological explanations, and the treatment options are of limited effect. We aimed to elucidate the underlying biology of cLBP in a subgroup of patients with Modic changes type I (suggestive of inflammatory vertebral bone marrow lesions) by correlating gene expression in blood with patient-reported outcomes on disability and pain intensity and explore sex differences. Patients were included from the placebo group of a clinical study on patients with cLBP and Modic changes.

The ultrastructural organization of the nuclei of the tegmental region in juvenile chum salmon () was examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The dorsal tegmental nuclei (DTN), the nucleus of (NFLM), and the nucleus of the oculomotor nerve (NIII) were studied. The ultrastructural examination provided detailed ultrastructural characteristics of neurons forming the tegmental nuclei and showed neuro-glial relationships in them.

Olive cake was incorporated at a low inclusion rate (3.7%) into the rations of dairy cows through partial substitution of maize, and its effects on milk production, general health, and fertility traits were investigated. Multiparous purebred Holstein dairy cows (n = 148) were divided into two groups: a treated group (n = 86) and a control group (n = 62).

Studying the blood cell morphology of marine mammals provides an opportunity to elucidate the physiological mechanisms of adaptive changes associated with the aquatic habitat that occur at the cellular level, as well as adaptations to changing environmental conditions and under various physiological and pathological processes. The Baikal seal [ (family Phocidae)] is endemic to the freshwater Lake Baikal, but comprehensive hematology data are not available. We studied the morphological features of blood cells of twelve clinically normal, adult Baikal seals ( = 6 males, = 6 females) from two oceanariums under professional care for eight years.

Hybrid Hydrogel Supplemented with Algal Polysaccharide for Potential Use in Biomedical Applications.

Gels

December 2024

Department of Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and Catalysis, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Bucharest, 4-12 Regina Elisabeta Blvd., 030016 Bucharest, Romania.

Hydrogels are a viable option for biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ability to incorporate various healing agents while maintaining their biological efficacy. This study focused on the preparation and characterization of novel hybrid hydrogels enriched with the natural algae compound Ulvan for potential use in wound dressings. The characterization of the hydrogel membranes involved multiple methods to assess their structural, mechanical, and chemical properties, such as pH measurements, swelling, moisture content and uptake, gel fraction, hydrolytic degradation, protein adsorption and denaturation tests, rheological measurements, SEM, biocompatibility testing, and scratch wound assay.
