Experiments were performed in order to investigate whether the capacity of periodic motor excitation in rats during early postnatal life is the intrinsic feature of immature spinal cord or it is caused by supraspinal input. It was shown that after low spinal cord transection, birsts of periodic activity can still be obtained in m. gastrocnemius but their duration and amplitude are significantly reduced. After brain stem transection at intercollicular level, this type of activity remains unchanged or slightly increased. It was concluded that periodic motor excitation is due to the spinal mechanisms but bulbo-spinal facilitative influences are necessary for normal intensity of autogenic activity.

Introduction: External fixators are utilized to temporarily stabilize bicondylar tibial plateau fractures. They can be prepped during definitive surgery to help maintain fracture length and alignment. However, there is a potential for increased infection by leaving the external fixator on during the surgery.

The benefits of estrogen treatment on cognition in middle-aged and older women are dependent on many factors, including the timing of treatment. Moreover, the potential interactive effects with other lifestyle factors, such as exercise, are poorly understood. In this study, we tested for lasting benefits of independent and combined treatment with estrogen and voluntary exercise initiated in midlife, using a rat model of menopause.

Spasticity is a common comorbidity of spinal cord injury (SCI), disrupting motor function and resulting in significant discomfort. While elements of post-SCI spasticity can be assessed using pre-clinical SCI models, the robust measurement of spasticity severity can be difficult due to its periodic and spontaneous appearance. Electrical stimulation of sensory afferents can elicit spasticity-associated motor responses, such as spasms; however, placing surface electrodes on the hindlimbs of awake animals can induce stress or encumbrance that could influence the expression of behaviour.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution poses an important problem, but limited information is available about the toxicology effects of Cd on freshwater invertebrates. We investigated the accumulation, oxidative stress, microbial community changes, and transcriptomic alterations in apple snails ) under Cd stress. The snails were exposed to the 10 μg/L Cd solution for 16 days, followed by a 16-day elimination period.

Molecular, genetic, and technological advances have led to increased knowledge regarding neonatal thyroid hormone metabolism disorders. Maternal and fetal hypothyroidism, which can cause psychomotor dysfunction syndromes or low IQ levels, can lead to brain damage, reduced fetal growth and incidental fetal death. The treatment of congenital hypothyroidism detected by screening programs performed during the neonatal period provides normalization of growth, IQ levels, and the physical, mental, and motor development of infants.
