Anthropometric, biochemical and haematological nutritional parameters were measured in 103 (65 men, 38 women) Durban Zulu adults (urban) and 109 (41 men, 68 women) Tugela Ferry Zulu adults (rural). Men conformed to an ideal weight for height whereas women were 18% overweight in Tugela Ferry and 30% so in Durban. Mean arm muscle circumference in men was between the 10th and 20th centiles. Other nutritional parameters were similar to those accepted internationally as normal. In particular the serum albumin level was normal in both urban and rural Zulus. There was little change in the parameters with age except that hand grip as measured by dynamometry fell with age (P less than 0,05). Serum albumin levels fell with age in women (P less than 0,01) but not in men. Nine mothers of babies suffering from kwashiorkor showed normal nutritional profiles.

Objective: To investigate the roles of fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Methods: The levels of SCFAs (acetate, propionate, and butyrate) in 83 patients with PCOS and 63 controls were measured, and their relationships with various metabolic parameters were analyzed. Intestinal microbiome analysis was conducted to identify relevant bacteria.
Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to provide an opinion on the safety of a change of the specifications of the authorised NF 'phytosterols/phytostanols' as a novel food (NF) pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. This authorised NF concerns phytosterols extracted from plants and which may be presented as free sterols and stanols or esterified with food grade fatty acids. It has to contain less than 81% β-sitosterol, less than 35% β-sitostanol, less than 40% campesterol, less than 15% campestanol, less than 30% stigmasterol and less than 3% brassicasterol.

Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) remains challenging due to a lack of clarity around the parameters that govern ETI plasma concentrations, whilst the use of concomitant CYP3A inducers rifabutin and rifampicin is not recommended. We present the complexities of TDM for ETI performed in a person with cystic fibrosis and refractory pulmonary disease. Utilising National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited assays and target considerations published by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Australia, ETI plasma concentration variability was monitored over the course of an acute admission with added complexity from an antibiotic regimen including rifabutin, a moderate cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) inducer, and clofazimine, a mild CYP3A inhibitor.

Objective: The mortality risk for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) can be predicted through clinical assessments and laboratory test results. The accurate utilization of these parameters is essential for timely intervention and the initiation of appropriate therapeutic strategies. This study aims to retrospectively examine the relationship between patients' clinical status at ICU admission, prognostic risk scoring systems, biochemical and hematological parameters, and mortality outcomes.
