The recovery cycle and two variants of the habituation hypothesis invoked to explain the N1-P2 amplitude attenuation of evoked potentials (EPs) to the second tone in two-tone series, were investigated. Paired stimuli were presented with a constant 360 ms inter-stimulus interval (ISI), but with different, fixed inter-pair intervals (IPIs) of 800, 1 000 and 1 200 ms in addition to a variable IPI averaging 1 000 ms. Amplitude reduction of the second tone EP was present for only the 1 000 and the 1 200 ms IPI series. These data contradict the specific predictions of all three hypotheses, although one prediction of the recovery cycle hypothesis was supported, stating that for a given relation of IPI to ISI the second tone attenuation effect disappears. To account for all findings in this experiment, an alternative explanation is advanced incorporating the concept of recovery cycle and involving the effects of rhythmic stimulation, whereby tone pairs are processed as units whose perceptual cohesiveness determines the distribution of response resources to each tone.

2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is one of the popular herbicides that is widely used in agriculture and can be found in food and water. A rapid and sensitive fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) was proposed for the detection of 2,4-D in juice and water. New tracers, 2,4-D-buthylenediamin fluoresceinthiocarbamyl (2,4-D-BDF) and 2,4-D-glycine aminofluorescein (2,4-D-GAF), were obtained and characterized.

Composite adsorbents based on a natural biopolymer matrix of chitosan, to which 4-amino-N'-hydroxy-1,2,5-oxadiazole-3-carboximidamide and its Se derivative were attached, were synthesized. A complex of physicochemical analysis methods indicates that the direct introduction of a matrix with high ionic permeability into the reaction mixture contributes to the formation of homogeneous particles of composite with developed surface morphology, which enhances the kinetic and capacitive parameters of uranium sorption in liquid media. It has been established that the direct introduction of a matrix with high ionic permeability into the reaction mixture contributes to the formation of homogeneous particles with a developed surface morphology, which enhances the kinetic and capacitive parameters of uranium sorption in liquid media.

A new composite material with enhanced sorption-selective properties for uranium recovery from liquid media has been obtained. Sorbents were synthesized through a polycondensation reaction of a mixture of 4-amino-N'-hydroxy-1,2,5-oxadiazole-3-carboximidamide (hereinafter referred to as amidoxime) and SiO in an environment of organic solvents (acetic acid, dioxane) and highly porous SiO. To establish optimal conditions for forming the polymer sorption-active part and the synthesis as a whole, a series of composite adsorbents were synthesized with varying amidoxime/matrix ratios (35/65, 50/50, 65/35).

The role of the hierarchical organization of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in its functioning, jet lag, and the light treatment of jet lag remains poorly understood. Using the core-shell model, we mimic collective behavior of the core and shell populations of the SCN oscillators in transient states after rapid traveling east and west. The existence of a special region of slow dynamical states of the SCN oscillators can explain phenomena such as the east-west asymmetry of jet lag, instances when entrainment to an advance is via delay shifts, and the dynamics of jet lag recovery time.

Food and agricultural commodities endure consistent contamination by mycotoxins, low molecular weight fungal metabolites, which pose severe health implications to humans together with staggering economic losses. Herein, a ratiometric aptasensor was constructed using silver-coated porous silicon (Ag-pSi) used as an efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. The bioassay included direct detection of fumonisin B (FB), an abundant and widespread contaminant, by a specific aptamer sequence immobilized on the porous transducer.
