Threshold shifts for the detection of vibrotactile test stimuli were determined as a function of the intensity of a masker. A 50-ms sinusoidal test stimulus was applied to the thenar eminence of the hand 25 ms after the termination of a 700-ms sinusoidal masker applied to the same site. The frequency of the test stimulus and the frequency of the masker were varied. To eliminate the influence of the Pacinian receptor system, stimuli were delivered through a 0.01-cm2 contactor. The results support the hypothesis that the detection of vibration delivered through a small contactor is determined by two separate populations of non-Pacinian receptors. The study constitutes a psychophysical demonstration of the existence of three receptor systems responsible for the detection of vibration.

Previous research has indicated that exposure to sensory stimuli of short or long durations influences the perceived duration of subsequent stimuli within the same modality. However, it remains unclear whether this adaptation is driven by the stimulus physical duration or by the perceived duration. Horizontal connections in anterior inferior temporal cortex (ITC) are thought to play an important role in object recognition by integrating information across spatially separated functional columns, but their functional organization remains unclear. Using a combination of optical imaging, electrophysiological recording, and anatomical tracing, we investigated the relationship between stimulus-response maps and patterns of horizontal axon terminals in the macaque ITC. In contrast to the "like-to-like" connectivity observed in the early visual cortex, we found that horizontal axons in ITC do not preferentially connect sites with similar object selectivity.

Extended performance of cognitively demanding tasks induces cognitive fatigue manifested with an overall deterioration of behavioral performance. In particular, long practice with tasks requiring impulse control is typically followed by a decrease in self-control efficiency, leading to performance instability. Here, we show that this is due to changes in activation modalities of key task-related areas occurring if these areas previously underwent intensive use.

Our lab previously established that repeated exposure to a bitter diet can increase salivary protein (SP) expression, which corresponds to an increase in acceptance of the bitter stimulus. However, this work was exclusively in male rodents, here we examine sex differences. We found that there are no differences in SP expression (experiment 1) or quinine diet acceptance (experiment 2) across stage of estrous cycle.

Hyperpolarized-C magnetic resonance imaging (HP-C MRI) was used to image changes in C-lactate signal during a visual stimulus condition in comparison to an eyes-closed control condition. Whole-brain C-pyruvate, C-lactate and C-bicarbonate production was imaged in healthy volunteers (N = 6, ages 24-33) for the two conditions using two separate hyperpolarized C-pyruvate injections. BOLD-fMRI scans were used to delineate regions of functional activation.
